Prototype All in a days work

Thankfully I’m lucky enough to work on the railway so thought I’d post some photos I’ve taken whilst out and about. Some photos are just quick snaps and others I’ve tinkered with to look a bit more atmospheric, but I’ll try and post some each day from my travels recently and over the last few years.

Here was my first Office for the day, 57003 which I’ve seen most days lately loitering around Edge Hill/Wavertree, and also a couple of Allerton depot.

Excellent stuff, Paul, but may I make a plea from those of us who still live in the last century? Would you be kind enough to add a description for each of the photos as, sadly, some of us don't easily recognise the vehicles or precise locations. I remember the 57s - I used to see them at Euston - but need some help with the others, please.

Will do Brian, sometimes I can’t get numbers etc though as it’s a quick grab of the phone to take a quick pic out of the back cab and to be honest I hardly know what all these new ones are but don’t tell anyone haha.

From yesterday’s photos though the cl185 is 185124 which had 185117 on the front and worked 1B66 0614 LiverpooL to Cleethorpes.

Thank you Paul.:) Well, if you can't identify some of the newer stock there's no hope for the rest of us..... Nice pics of the 33 (D65XX for me) and the 57 (Refurb'd 47 to me:))). Particularly great photos in the Severn Bridge Box. Is it still commissioned or lost following resignalling? It's a bit of an anachronism nowadays, isn't it.

Thanks Brian, Seven Bridge is still in fine working order although I don’t go there anymore. To be honest though the new stuff doesn’t interest me in the slightest especially the units, give me a 40 or a 47 any day and pre-tops at that

Here’s a few more pics from Shrewsbury of Severn Bridge signal box

You're right there, a 57 will always be a 47 for me. That headcode on the 33 (Crompton) dates some, i can remember that back at the beginning of the seventies, on i think, oil traffic through Eastleigh !

Even though most of my memories are from the mid 80’s early 90’s I model the mid 60’s as there was so much variety in traction and transitional liveries. The railway also looks and smells to clean now, the smell of diesel hanging in the air and oil soaked sleepers has long gone especially at Lime Street it’s far to pleasant ;)

I shall demonstrate my almost total disconnect from the modern rail scene by asking “What the heck is this all about?“
It looks like a semi-permanent form of dual loco coupling, but why?

Some 57’s were fitted with Dellner couplings to rescue Pendilino’s and drag Pendilino’s down the coast to Holyhead were there was no ohle. Looks like 57314 has had it removed though, I’m sure someone will have far more info than me though.

Tony,

I'm glad you asked!

cheers
Simon
Well you only have to take your eyes off the current railway scene for a number of years and you get left behind that’s for sure.

That said it is wonderful to see the old LNWR Shrewsbury box still going strong - interesting to note the thicker brick piers where the lower windows have been bricked up which I guess add significant extra strength to the building.

A couple a snowy shots from today as we leave Warrington behind heading for Liverpool

Passing through Hough Green station, I used to go here at least once a week with my mum in the early 80’s as my Nan and Grandad lived and even then I knew I wanted to work in the railway, it was class 108’s then though but it’s always a great feeling passing through knowing I made it.

Some absolute cracking photos there, especially with the contrast between the sky highlights and the monochrome track. I had never realised how straight that line was between Warrington and Liverpool.

A lot of the lines on the Cheshire plains are straight for long distances, a bit like Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. I think that route is the original Manchester to Liverpool line so may have been built as flat as possible and as straight as possible, no issues buying/grabbing land back then.

True - but it's not quite that flat!! The area is familiar to me as a popular cycling area and as an easy ride (minimal hills compared to the east of Preston!). Many of the lines seem to follow the canal routes for obvious reasons this just struck me as being particularly linear. If as you say it was part of the very original Manchester to Liverpool route then I will certainly look at it in a new light next time I'm circulating in that area.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and comments and yep think there might be a few Christmas cards getting made next year ;)

I’m long weekend now so no daily pics until at least Tuesday (rdw maybe) but I’ll dig some out if the archives. Hopefully a bit of modelling to once the ‘to do’ list off the mrs is complete! :))

Not the original L&M route. Hough Green is on what was the Manchester Central to Liverpool Central line (Cheshire Lines Committee?), which was pretty well dead straight for most of the way. I imagine the trains now run from M Piccadilly to L Lime St.?
Dave.
