I am curious though, if it wasn't operational possibly because the boiler was out of ticket, why was there a fire in it? Was it just for effect as there doesn't appear to be any pressure on it..

JB.
How very observant!!:D

Yes, the loco was in need of a rebuild at the time and the smoke was created by oily rags in the firebox. It was in the very early days of the North Norfolk and no trains were running. I have photos of the B12 taken at the same time.

I suspect you're right – it wouldn't be the first time that a preservation society has reported to such a subterfuge. They must all be suffering due to the lockdown wiping out their income.

There seem to be quite a few funds being started at the moment. Severn Valley seemed to be the first to start one up. I don't think EOR have one just yet though.

I'm quite good like that sometimes :))

We've done something similar in the past with absolute wrecks for April fools day.

I reckon 0.5 would be closer, depending on prototype - I use fuse wire (about 0.2) in 4mm which would be roughly 1/2" full size which seems about right?

Thanks chaps.

My excuse was that I had to drill the holes 1mm as that's the smallest (sharp) drill bit that I had and 0.7mm wad the smallest that looked 'okay' and didn't flop about in the hole.

I think I will go back and address though.

After that little interlude...

From previously. Cracking on with the boiler...

I was lucky enough to find a tubeplate in my scrap metal box. Handy as I thought I'd given my last two to Nick Dunhill for the Whitby tank builds.

Chopping out 95% of the rear smokebox plate was fun!

Just in case it's a help.

I know your loco is a GER J15 and this is an NER J21 but it's the only photo I have of a loco with the smokebox clothing all removed. Neither do I know whether the layout is likely to be common to both. Also I suspect that the tubular stuff is foreign invaders from another part of the loco - or even a different loco entirely!

Thanks Brian!

You did have me going for a bit there though thinking it was a J15. Looks like that main steam pipe casting has two flanges and so two steam pipes one to each cylinder, where (as you'll see shortly) I have done one steam pipe into the top of the cylinder as confirmed by friends at NNR.

So on with a bit of smokebox. Inner and outer wrapper rolled around a flux bottle and a couple of bits of pipe. I had to get the radii as damn near as possible because I had taken so much meat out of the rear smokebox former. No chance of using brute force to push the wrapper into place with this one. Inner wrapper was spot on!

Next challenge was a Blastpipe with a smokebox/boiler retaining nut incorporated..

Took a little bit of thinking about and gettin all the bits of brass stock out as the casting tapers from square at the bottom to round at the top....and needed a nut in the bottom.

Then onto main steam pipe and fitting all together.

Sorry but that's a poor excuse :D - it quite easy to make a small spade drill from a small needle or bit guitar wire and an oil stone to the size you need.
I think I will go back and address though.
That does look a lot better.

Thanks Adrian,

I wonder if anyone has any tips (pardon pun) for sharpening small drill bits. Have so many now that would struggle with a block of Lurpack.

Morning JB,

You have done a very neat job of cutting out that hole in that rear smoke box cover, I cannot see where you started with the blade unless it's that slight blemish in that alignment slot?
