Would anybody happen to have any details on the font and size of the lettering and backing plate?

Hi Cynric, the size of the letters are 4" on the nameplates and 5" for the numberplates. As for the font i think it was called grotesque font.

I have found a couple they seem ok but they were commercial fonts ie cost money! I need to trawl the open source fonts...

Apart from spacing this one looks about right... its 'Grotesque Display Bold Condensed'
what do you think?

Maybe the Helvetica Font is closer...?

Helvetica LT85 Heavy ??

Helvetica Bold (maybe a little "thin"?)

HelveticaNeue Heavy looks very close.

Check the letter 'S' in particular. On Page 142 of the OPC book "Class 52 A Tribute to the Westerns" (by David Birt) there's a nameplate diagram giving letter dimensions, spacing etc... rather annoyingly it doesn't say what the actual Font is...!!! :headbang:
