Fraser, I agree with your observation... let us not forget the "coupling" options in the CPL Products range see here.Have you considered using closer to scale coupling hooks? Ambis do a range in 7mm and I think the same in 4mm. Slaters do some nice scale 3 link couplings in 4mm but they wouldn't suit this one.
The coupling hooks do look a bit big, they are all I had to hand and I'm also not too good at using 3 links so they are easier to use. I plan on smaller ones on any locos I use.Looks good. Thank you.Looks excellent to me!
With the Hornby 21T hoppers, the body is very easy to separate from the underframe moulding, it just clips in place. I always separate mine and remove the wheels and give the u/frame a waft over with Tamiya TS62 or 69 from a rattle can. This gives a suitable base coat for further weathering with Lifecolor/Vallejo paints.

These are not hoppers but it shows the idea!

Steve, I spray the wheels with Tamiya TS1 first, then add rust highlights when they are back in the u/frame with Vallejo rust. Thanks Peter, do you paint the wheels using the same colour?
Def not 7mm Tony, I cant say I'm not tempted by some of the models available now though! There’s a couple of weird things going on here:
1) Hornby don’t do 7mm hoppers
2) You have huge thumbs
Or maybe this really is 4mm modelling…..

I've airbrushed the underframes using frame dirt as a base for further weathering, I've also got some AK weathering pencils so I might add a few marks somewhere just to try them out.
Thanks Jan, I know there's a lot more I could do in the way of detailing, I've still got to represent the levers and rails on the ends.Hi @steve50
These are REALLY lovely. I particularly like the chipped paintwork on the first example. Now, about those chunky brake levers...
Cheers
Jan
Lovely work!
Any more photos of the layout they appear on?
I'm a big fan of Smiths coupling hooks, despite them being overscale. The coupling hooks do look a bit big, they are all I had to hand and I'm also not too good at using 3 links so they are easier to use.
