Wagon oddballs: an unusual Southern van

It's amazing what you can find in a picture that you hadn't spotted first, second or third time of asking. Here's an example:

Nice shot of a standard 5 on a mixed goods with, superficially, an interesting mix of tanks at the rear. What's that behind the loco'? Why, it's a (possibly 'the') Southern pent-roofed van, a characteristically SR (Bulleid-era) experiment, not perpetuated. Can anyone with a copy of SR Wagons vol. 4 fill in the details? I think that there's a drawing in there as well. The large size shows that it has received plate front axleboxes (possibly replacements).

The downside of all this is that, having spotted it, I may be forced to model the blasted thing.

Another vehicle, in the same Flickr gallery which is a bit more prosaic - in relative terms only - is a six-wheel LMS fish van (for which Chivers do a nice plastic kit). Nothing so surprising in that but has anyone out there heard tell of any being painted ice blue? I ask because there appear to be two in the same train (first and seventh vehicles behind the loco').

Hi Adam,

had a look in 'Vol 4' there is an end elevation drawing of wagon 49363 together with a 3/4 photo of it, post May 1944 showing signs of enemy action damage. The caption states that it was not fitted with a tail lamp bracket, fitted vans normally had one on the left hand side.

The wagon was built to Diag 1458 in January 1939 as part of order A969 and it was fitted with AVB 2 x 15" cylinders and four brake blocks.

Withdrawl date unknown, but was noted in traffic in 1961.

Upgrade to IE9?

I've just copied and pasted Mike's long Flikr URLs into the address bar and both work with no problem.

It looks as if it is your installation rather than any problem with IE8 itself. Mike and I have shown that IE 8 & 9 work OK for us.

Thanks Mike. I think we can stretch the withdrawal date to at least 1964 now, since it seems probable that this is the same vehicle (assuming that there was only one of them).

I think I've seen that shot in print, possibly in a contemporary Trains Illustrated. IIRC there were three in all (my only SR wagon book is at home)

I've seen (and may have a print of) a Don Rowland shot of one in white, and Ice Blue is obviously a logical progression, although dark red* is obviously the more usual livery.

Goodness no, not that circular debate again. I was a little surprised I must admit since I thought that they'd have been out of general traffic by that point. Worth knowing though should I ever get my hands on the Chivers kit.

As for the pent roofed van, I must get my own copy of SR vol. 4...

I'm still kicking myself for not picking up the cheap copies of volume 4... Dad has one of cousrse, but it isn't the same. Freight brown possibly? Bit of a stretch to tell if I'm honest and vans are problematic when it comes to colouring.
