Shelf queen - GE 4 wheel carriage works train.

Hi all,

I've just asked Brian Dale if he has any recollections of GE 4 wheel carriages being used for anything other than passenger use, but thought that whilst I'm at it I would put it out there amongst the rest of the forum.



I bought 3 GE Models 4 wheel 3rd class coach kits a while back, and I quite fancy turning them into some kind of breakdown/works train, and wondered if anyone had ever seen them see for such a use. I was thinking about placing brass on the inside of the window openings and so turning them into closed vans.

I'm never going to need such old coaching stock, and it would be nice to find a good interesting use for them.

Also worth asking Buckjumper, he's a mine of info when dealing with the old GER stuff.
I do have the GER Soc. Journals on disc and it may throw up some info.

If you could convert one to a Brake Third you could have had one of these

Hi JB,

The H&BR converted several of its 4 wheel coaches for various roles:

Travelling painters van
Tool van
Inspection saloon
Fruit vans, some of which became stores vans

I know that's not specific GE, but does indicate the possibilities, the fruit vans did have the glazing replaced with sheet, unfortunately there aren't any (known) phots
