I have just seen a posting elsewhere for another possible modeller's 'Bible'

Mk1 & Mk2 Coaching Stock by Hugh Longworth - published price £45, no details of when it is due out, or who the publishes are (his other books have been published through OPC/Ian Allan) perhaps Simon could enlighten us.

cheers

It is Ian Allan/OPC, it's not quite out yet, due in June I think.

It's on order "in da shop".

Does anyone know how this differs/improves on Parkin with supplements for Mark 1s and Harris for Mark 2s?

Pre orders are a good price on Amazon.

Hi All

I know these books are a great source of info, but £45 for a book seems a bit excessive . Im sorry :'(, i know all the work that goes into producing these books, But.......

My limited budget doesnt stretch that far

I really havnt put this to get a reaction

Steve .

Bah! It's obviously dropped in price. I think I bought the pair when the supplement was freshly printed. :'(

Still, it's now well-thumbed and a valuable part of my reference library.

Astonishingly before it's even reached the shelves it's down to £28.80 delivered free in the UK from Amazon....

The Parkin supplement was never £25.00 from the HMRS - perhaps you bought your copy from Robert Humm:p:eek::oops:

I hesitate to flag this up, but all Ian Allan books are available at significantly reduced prices from Amazon, this is because Ian Allan have decided to give preferential terms to Amazon so that they (Amazon) can sell in a "Every little bit helps" way to their customers.

All of which rather sours the relationship between Ian Allan and retailers operating outside of the "rain forest". It also means that I stock the minimum of Ian Allan stuff "in da shop" that I can get away with.

On "small ticket" items this perhaps doesn't really matter but on a book retailing at £40.00 plus I don't blame customers for wanting to save what is a significant amount of money. Of course Amazon can get things wrong and is generally a pretty lousy source of bibliograpic information - but then of course it's brilliant in many other ways.

I do wonder whether Ian Allan isn't inflating RRP so that it makes sensible money on its Amazon sales, but if this is true it's rather taking the proverbial out of the "non rain forest" retailing world.

Either way I think giving huge discounts to the likes of Amazon on what are specialist publications is at best short sighted and at worst commercially suicidal.

Just my opinion of course.

And you might be lucky enough to get a mug of coffee!

And I'll bet that as a percentage of turnover, TTT pays substantially more in taxes to HMRC than does Amazon!

So that makes two more good reasons to support your local bookseller.

Its prob been worth its weight in gold then ;)

I can say it's earned me a few sovs, certainly.

I just had a peek at the synopsis of Mr Longworth's book. As a modeller I'm after good photos. I'm not sure lists of lots and so on is what I need, so I will probably wait until I can thumb through a copy before I decide whether to give it shelf space.

Fairly new here, so still working through threads of interest. I can see it's been a while since this was discussed on this thread, but the Supplement to Keith Parkin's book on the Mark 1 is now £4.00 to non-members on the HMRS site (+£3.00 p&p). Alternatively, £28.00 on Amazon (+ mere £2.80 p&p).... I decided on the HMRS one (plus Oil on the Rails at £6.00 +p&p).

Seems that they have reduced a number of books, perhaps they are clearing stock?
