On the GCR Quorn and Swithland can both be switched out - absolute block, proper signalling! Leaving Loughborough working to Rothley.

Levisham on the NYMR can switch off out but very rarely does these days.

On the national network Stranraer can switch out transforming ETB into One Train Working controlled by Dunragit SB.

Hi James

Do you know, what happens about the road crossing at Levisham if the box is switched out? I had assumed controlling the signalling + gates for a road crossing would preclude switching out, unless the road can simply be closed.

I asked my friend Sam who volunteers on the NYMR - he's also a Network Rail signaller and has an encyclopedic knowledge of signalling.

My friend Sam said:
Levisham hasn’t switched out for at least 8 years due to faults with the Level Crossing. It is designed that when it is switched out the crossing works as an ABCL which is why it has the white light even though that’s not required for a MCB.

It last switched out when on staff & ticket. Whilst the key token system is working and has been tested it has never had a train through it in action.

Alton box on the Mid-Hants can switch out to make the Medstead-Alton section one train working - but with the added fun of a relay-operated auto-working system to control the run-round.

Having made the decision to model a ground frame beneath the road bridge, I turned my attention to the bridge itself. Whilst pondering various options, I came across some rather nice resin casting by L-Cut for a steel plate bridge.

A pair of abutments were made up from scrap 3mm fibreboard and styrene, and this is what I came up with.

This is just a dry run to check clearances and proportions before I cut the plate girders to size. The next stage will involve building up the palisters, completing the wing walls and adding the newels. The whole bridge will then be clad with individual stones cut from waste styrene in the same manner as the engine shed. Mr Pencarrow certainly has a lot to answer for, but the method sure beats using embossed styrene or card building sheets. Timbers have also been laid for the Modelu point rodding stools, but that's a job for another time.
