4mm Lellizzick Quay a NCR backwater

Rough Ideas, Photo Inspiration

What's the plan Ade?
Ah well umm! I need to rough out some track but I’m hopeful it will feature some 009 L&B.
It’s basically a scenic storage yard.
But the inspiration is a north of the border layout on RM name of which escapes me and Fremington Quay.

My mind has more ideas than could possibly fit so I’ll have to trim it to something practical and try and remember less is more!
Cheers for looking in Chris.

3.5 mm ply finishing the quay area. The 9mm top is just an off cut I had lying around the curve already cut from it when I did a previous board.
I then went on and fixed the top on. Went in a direction I’d not seen done so I may be a pioneer! They were stuck on with silicone sealant a good bead to give a floating on the framework effect. We all go for foam cork copydex sticking track with no pins to achieve less noise drum transfer to the boards, so I came up with this no nails or screws holds a treat and appear to be like on rubber. No pics of that this evening more soon.

The siliconed on top board.

Then time to sort the track plan.
The rear line will be the through running line on a small embankment liked that in the photos of the layout I screenshot the images of above lost the link to it now!
Then the storage/ narrow gauge transfer sidings? Maybe a little NG engine shed although that could be low relief as a scene entry RHS, the fremington signal boxi quite like too.

A lot to think about

Tunnel Mocking Up

Ok bit more done.
Added a bit more length as just where the 4ft sheet met the curved one I had fitted, again all glued down with silicone hoping for the rubberised cushion. The extension cantilevered off the original board, the top was screwed on the frame in a standard way. Just as I had a ply shortage to do it the same as the quay board. Probably a mistake but my impatience got the better of me.

Mocking up the scene of the tunnel exit more a photo prop than anything. But the transition from one board to the other.
With a cutting a,so to the quayside.

Back indoors as the Dark Nights arrived.
Tunnel Mouth stuck playing with the rest.

Bit more to add to the story of the build.
Advice I’ve read is don’t run lines parallel to the baseboard edges and trying that out on the small embankment I’d agree I trialed some placement before the track underlay went down.

From code 100 to code 75 from left Meldon Board to the quay board straight into a tight radius curve but it works after trialing it.

Mocking up the supports for the 009 above.

Got the underlay down stuck with carpet glue as it’s instant and the foam board and polystyrene did a test and used it on that too! Instant that’s what I like.

All weighted down ready for the next bit.

Ade, I do like your approach, quite similar to mine though I do like screws and nails! In 7mm scale we can't afford to not parallel our edge of the board tracks, but I certainly wanted to do that on Penmaenpool when that was the flavour of the year. I notice your track weights, I started using full wine bottles a few years ago. More recently they have disappeared, I don't know where!

Cheers Paul,
Anything to hand for a bit of weight! Bottles are downstairs this is in the back bedroom too far away.
All came out ok as you will see soon.
Thanks for looking in.

On to working up the ledge/terrace/cutting
Rails for the removable narrow gauge track bed boards to rest on.

It’s been done so many times it’s difficult to be original with the narrow gauge tunnel portal above a standard gauge one.
Trying different positions to work out where the supporting woodwork ought to go.

Not sure I said above so this may be a repeat the narrow gauge will enter the tunnel and disappear through the backscene to reappear further along the extended board.

Went for that but it may change now I’m further on. So woodwork cut it to allow for support to track bed and keeping it removable.

Nearly up to date now.

Bit more to report.
The deck cut to size and placed on the supports. I’m probably going to lay the track on foam board here in an attempt to stop the drumming effect and glue some on the underside too. Then the track will be fed via male female connectors to allow for access to the tunnel below.

5543A309-C7E2-4725-AE9E-7EBDA5CF687D.jpeg

Then a better idea of the look now the track bed board was in place as the next 5! Photos show. The N Gauge tunnel mouth is a touch small so debating whether to trade it in for the bridge style L&B one on eBay.

I wasn’t convinced now as it kind of faced the backscene, so a few other positions for the 009 exit were tried.
Below was ok but to close to the backscene I feel to get it looking half decent.

8D6A59E1-771E-454E-8B49-863FB021657B.jpeg 26C57631-6E38-45E3-BF23-B1B2263CD754.jpeg 8579A579-3F9F-4972-888D-66D232E466A6.jpeg 8872FA4B-CDAE-46F1-B96C-09D575B0645F.jpeg

So as below moved the portal closer to the front it’s better but I didn’t really want a sheer cliff of the height that would be if it went there.

019B8966-419E-4B73-A7BF-D94A465390BE.jpeg

So still chewing it over.

9C4E6460-3298-47BB-95AA-CD84BC88A329.jpeg

Below the tunnel lining on the main line portal needed to be installed, so I could see where I could drop the NG track bed down to. As I see a need for a reduced incline to give the L&B loco a chance!
Out with the cereal packet cardboard and using a spare portal as a guide a shape was cut and fitted into the Lellizzick portal, the bend was stapled at the top overlap.
Holding to shape was providing to be a nightmare to stick the stone paper lining into it.
So I made a Heath Robinson jig to hold it and painted PVA on in a hope it will retain a bit of shape to stick the lining paper stone to.

A40E2852-7B05-46CA-984A-0AD5D8D3DFCF.jpeg

Now I’ve realised I need to ballast that bit of track while access is good before installing the tunnel lining! Oh the joys still it’s heading in the right direction each bit is a bit closer to the end goal.
Cheers

Tunnel Lining Construction

Been a while but a bit has been going on.
Back tail end of November I got to grips with the tunnel lining.
PVAed the inside of the cardboard in a desperate attempt to get it to hold its shape.
It actually worked so happy with that.

D2B981B2-C6EB-48CB-BE13-AC31618FEE01.jpeg

Then uhu glued the printed stone paper on it.

95C9AF21-647B-4A85-8378-9E99C3FCF9D0.jpeg

painted and ballasted the track.

50/50 Pva glued it then realised it need ballast up to the tunnel walls!
