Hello everyone

I've just signed up today. I work in O Gauge, primarily building loco's from kits, but I'm tooling up for a first scratch build. My main interest in pre-grouping GWR but I'm also interested in the GNR.

That said, I've attached a photo of my last build, the MOK 14xx. I'm painting it at the moment, to be followed by a curved frame County (David Andrews kit) and a Martin Finney Adams T3. Current build is the MOK Armstrong 4-4-0. I'm not sure if the photo will be the right way up [it wasn't but I've fixed it - Adrian], if its upside down as on the preview any help will be appreciated!

Thanks to Richard Lambert for steering me to this site.

Welcome Neill, you will feel at home here as there are a number of Australian members too. ;)

The members here love lots and lots of pictures. So you know how to keep everyone happy. Should be an easy job for you with so many loco builds

We are a friendly lot so come on in and have a great time.

Paul.

That's a nice clean build - just curious what's the vertical pipe at the front of the cab for - I don't remember seeing that detail on previous builds posted.

Also is it Scale7? - the tyre profile looks like it should be.

but I'm tooling up for a first scratch build.
I will definitely be interested in the scratch build efforts and the tooling you are thinking of. Sometimes I think what most people have for building kits is more than sufficient for scratch building. When I first started work and was "sans" workshop I scratch built a Y10 with a Black and Decker Workmate and a few hand tools.

Having been prompted to look at scores of photos of 14xxs, there are two positions for what is, I suspect, an electrical cable rather than a pipe. For example in c1947, 1447 had it at the rear of the cab entrance:
1447 at Reading shed yard c1947.jpg
but by 1964 it was as modelled:
1447 at Swindon works 9May64 2.jpg
All of the photos that I have of of the class numbered as 48xxs show the rear position for the cable.
I know I haven't answered your question about what it's for so I'll leave that for others! I suspect that it's related to ATC.

Many thanks. It is finescale, they are bog standard Slaters wheels. As regards tooling up, I have to confess to being a toolaholic! I've already got more than I really need, for example a few years back I splashed out on a refurbed Myson Super 7, having been advised by Alan Harris it was the best choice for turning up his wheel castings. Then he retired and I've never turned one. It does get other use but I'm getting something more suitable for really small work. What I do really need is a decent guillotine to cut sheet metal to size, I am waiting on Midland rail to come up trumps on that score.

Had a great night doing some late night shunting at North Weald on a 14xx a couple of years back. One of the local residents wasn't so happy about it unfortunately..

One of those nights that'll stick with me for a while.

JB.
