Thanks for posting. Along with the locomotives I liked the Fordson Major, or was it a Super Major, with the barrel, (full of water or concrete?) being used as a counterweight. Can anyone tell me why the NCB painted a cross on the side of their wagons was it for identification in the marshalling yards?

I believe the cross was to designate “internal user only”, ie, not allowed out on the main line.

I'm sure someone will be along to confirm or correct me in the near future.

That's right - and it was a more or less universal thing, not confined to the NCB. That said, not all colliery systems used the X marking, so there was variation.
