Early era diesel locomotive crew

I'm hoping to place a driver and 'second man' in my early 1960s diesel locos.
However, my layout will be terminus to fiddle yard without turning facilities.
So how do you guys populate your cabs? It seems an overkill to have four crew aboard the loco.
Would there be instances where the second man would sit in the trailing cab at the drivers control desk? (Passenger and goods train)
I have seen many instances where the guard is seated in the trailing cab on goods trains, but usually when the train is braked without a van.
Any thoughts and suggestions always welcome!!

You could just say he has walked through the loco to fetch something from the other cab and vice versa depending on the direction of travel. Or they could be an off duty or training crew. Otherwise I wouldn't know.

This where I find modelling US has it's advantages with single cab locos.

I think they may be a tad out of gauge!! :)):))

I have the same issue.
Having talked with my drivers I have settled on:
No1 cab Driver & secondman
No2 cab driver only

The extra man in the rear cab can be the shunter or any other train crew when the cab control is locked out to work No1 cab, this is not intrusive I feel.

If you are using DCC why not have a crew in each cab hinged and connected to a servo so they pop up when required? Or slide out from the engine room door.

2 staff in back cab could be traviling as passenger, or road lerner's.

I have visions of watching 'Thunderbirds' as a child! I could add a 'sun roof' at each end of the loco and the crew could drop in via a series of pulleys and slides :D

That is probably a reasonable compromise. Thanks Cliff
