Dukedog (prototype) and Siphon G (model) help, please!

Guys,

I'm not sure whether this should go here or in the Resources bit, but here goes:

I'm trying to find photos of Dukedog/Earl 9015 during the late GWR/early BR period.  During this time she was working from Didcot, so I suppose may have got to Oxford, run over the DNS, etc.  I've been told by 'those who (should) know' that she's quite a commonly photographed example of the class, but can I find photos; can I heck.  So some references to photos would be most welcome...

I'm also the proud owner of an 0-gauge Ian Kirk 'Siphon G' kit, it's for the outside-framed (O11 ?) version.  I've found some good info and photos (the SVR website was a good start), but can anybody provide me with guidance as to who does suitable parts to detail up the model?  In terms of specifics the DC brakegear causes me some concern, but I can see that I'm going to need a lot of parts to get it on it's way: lamp tops, steps, gangways, buffers, etc.  Oh, and does anyone do a really good 9' wheelbase 'American' bogie?  The basic mouldings strike me as being a very good start for making one of these vehicles and as it will be running in with a set of Orion/Hurn coaches, it needs to be well made!

Cheers,

Steph

Hi Steph,

jltrt do a American 9' bogie kit, I cannot tell you how the build went as it's still in the box . But the detail as you would expect is first class and it's fully sprung, mind you it should be for 36 quid .

Martyn,

Good to hear from you!  The JLTRT bogie sounds interesting and the price is comparable to the Slater's SR 8' bogies I seem to have been buying and building in bulk recently.  Although I build to 'finescale' standards (as in not Scale7!) I still like to have sprung coach bogies as they're quieter IMHO.  And full brakegear is a must.

So that's one problem down, many thanks for your help.

Hi Steph,

Good to hear from you to , it was at the Reading show last year that I brought a Siphon H kit to build and I noticed that the bogies were basically a white metal casting . And as luck would have it I had just left Jltrt's stand and remembered Pete had some built up American bogies on display showing full brake gear, made up of etches and crisp lost wax castings. So out came the credit card once again as you do  8). Just need to find the time now to warm up the soldering iron.

Talk soon,  Martyn.

Well, that's torn it!  I just won the Javelin 'Dukedog' that appeared on eBay.  So the good news is that my Finney 'Duke' now has another loco to progress through my batch-building process with.  The bad news is that I may yet have to negotiate the new Slater's outside cranks and that I really will need to make more concerted efforts to track down pictures...

I'm a danger to myself sometimes aren't I?  At least I know the kit is good: my Dad built a stunning model of 9017 from the same kit all of ten years ago.  Inside motion, Ron Chaplin transmission, compensation and, more recently, sound fitted too; the 'works'.

Right, time to try that again...

A more thorough on-line search has turned up a couple of references to the Dukedog.  If anyone has copies of the following, please can you have a look and give me a quick description of what is there?  I'll then have a think about getting hold of some back issues...

Great Western Railway Journal #27 has a view of 6133 and 9015 at Loadwater in 1950
Great Western Railway Journal #67 has some detail views of an Earl/Dukedog
Backtrack Vol4 No5 (1990?) has a piece on the Dukedogs including the view of 9015 at Witney in 1954.

Many thanks,

Steph

:)) :))

67 has two detail shots of the bogie and the outside crank/frame
27 is a double page spread of the station showing 3/4 rear view
I would say 27 is more use
BTW there is a nice shot of the MSWR 2-4-0 in one of my Bradford Barton books

Cynric,

Many thanks, I'll get 'my man' on it.  Simon if you're reading this, please expect another flippant email...

I'm starting to get pics of 9015 sorted now, my Dad's just sent me one and I've got four on their way from the GWT at Didcot.  All in the right sort of era too.  The photo Dad sent actually resulted in an unprintable reply when I realised that the tender (at least) was lined BR mixed-traffic livery (1951 photo)!
