7mm David Andrews E1 4-4-0

Following the recently completed D1, I've made a start on the E1. As with the D1, the bogie has been put together first.

The support brackets for the compensating beams, drilled and 0.6mm rivets fitted.

The basic bogie frame assembled.

First problem, the etched holes do not line up.20220727_154933.jpg

Once some judicious filing had taken place, I could continue assembling the bogie.

Finally, mounted on its wheels.

When it has had a thorough clean up it will be ready for priming.

Ian Can I ask, where did you purchase your Scale Hardware rivets from? Was it a UK supplier or from the US? Your E1 is coming along nicely, an inspiration.
Hi Tony,

Thank you.
I purchased the rivets directly from Model Motorcars in the USA.

Another fab build and great views to help with scratch building in 4mm, thanks for sharing them.
Hi Duncan,

Thank you. Hopefully the instructions are coming in handy as well.

Modifications to the cab side sheet returns. This is mentioned in the instructions until stage 31. We're at stage 7 in the build here.

Cab now in place.

Moving on to the firebox, the D1 kit had an additional etch to go behind the firebox front, so that there was extra material to allow for filing the wrapper into a nice curve. The E1 kit does not have this, so I annealed a length of 2mm sq brass bar and formed it to shape.

In the meantime, handrail knobs, washout plugs and rivets were added to the wrapper.

The main body of the firebox was completed, with the 2mm sq bar soldered in place. It will next have the firebox front filed to a nice (hopefully) curve.

Before that though, a test fit.

Hi Duncan,

Thank you. Hopefully the instructions are coming in handy as well.

Thanks Ian, They certainly are. I need to finish other things off before properly getting into building , but the instructions, plus the photos is helping with working out how to do it in 4mm. I appreciate someone is about to bring out a kit, but looking at it there is so much that would have to be changed and I have already cut a fair bit of the tender out.

Modifications made to the frames to prevent the leading bogie wheels rubbing and not rotating on tight curves, following a similar alteration to the D1 4-4-0.

Scrap brass etch marked and filed to match the frame outline.

Frames after the halt etch "cut-outs" have been removed.

The brass inserts were then soldered in place on the inside of the frames.

A shot with the bogie in place.

The bogie pivot is a replacement item purchased from MOK.

Might be anathema but perhaps black plasticard in place of the brass frame inserts?

No shorts, and the paint don’t wear off…

lovely build!
Hi Simon,

The D1 which was modified first has been tested on the layout where I noticed the issue, and now is fine. The E1 should be just as good. The additional 0.7mm throw allows the wheels to stay clear. There have been no shorts so far.....fingers crossed.

Next stage is the smokebox. Now this should be fun !

Three layers.

Not forgetting the half etch wrapper.

Oh, and the boiler tube itself....

Additionally, only the outer wrapper has any holes etched for the handrail knobs and steam pipe.
