I've seen the real locos but sometimes you forget the sheer size of these locomotives and this one especially with the combined dome and top feed really shows it's GW ancestry.
I fancied a princess before Sunday now I WANT one! So thanks for that !!!!!
They are big arn't they
, I had a look round 6203 at NRM once, very impressive and I do have a DA one under the bench which is rapidly moving up the timetable, first I have to crack on (work bench update shortly) with the one I've just started, then sort a layout plan then the Princess beckons.
Your right about the boiler, earlier Stanier boilers were virtually a direct copy of Swindon practice, maybe a little more superheat. The top feed (3rd boiler ring) is pure GWR and that's what they fitted (GWR bonnet) to the first Stanier loco (2-6-0 mogul) it was quickly removed and a fake dome cover made up to house the top feed. The real dome (steam collector) did not appear until later boilers, like the GWR, steam was collected within the boiler and required no dome as such. Later boilers had a seperate top feed housing and a seperate dome for steam collection but early boilers had top feed only.
Your photo angle does make it look like an enlarged King class, I was never a fan of BR blue but having seen some recent preservation locos in that colour and Tornado in the flesh, I think it looks quite dashing
