A question for the GWR fans….

In the photo below there is a X above the loco number, does anyone know its meaning ? On some 8F’s there was a star above the number meaning the loco had been balanced for high speed running. So maybe it had the same meaning, but we are talking the 2884 class locos , not noted for there turn of speed…

By working books I assume is meant the Sectional Appendices to the Working Timetable?
