3D prints in G3

Couldn't find an old thread that really fitted the bill so here's a general place to list 3D designs for the G3 market. To get the ball rolling I've recently been asking Simon of BR Blue Models if he would be will willing to blow up his 4-wheeled Wisbech & Upwell coach from 4mm. He's already done so do for O gauge and I think it's quite a decent looking design to complement the Garden Railway Specialist's Y6 kit.
The camera shy luggage van by comparison isn't as detailed as it could be for large scale if being honest but it's also available if you fancy an easy shell over the scratch route.
I'll be ordering both so can show some pics as and when but if there's anything elsie in his shop that takes your fancy it would be worth asking if he would be willing to likewise enlarge.
Shapeways haven't announced a Black Fri/Cyber Monday discount this year but typically they put out a 10% off code just before, so that's worth holding out for if you are looking to order anything from them this side of Christmas. Just a heads up though now we're outside of Europe there's an import charge to be aware of that's not initially shown in the basket total (from what I can recall).

Steve,

You're correct about Shapeways manufacturing in the EU. The last order I had from them was hit with VAT and import charges that were not shown on the invoice from their website, plus my order was delayed more than two weeks by Customs. I now use a UK supplier.

Hi Nick
Yeah it's quite an add on to factor with Shapways's price creeping. It's been almost a year now so I can't quite recall what is and isn't displayed when checking the basket out but believe the VAT charge came via email about a fortnight afterwards.
All in all I'd prefer using a cheaper alternative to them whenever possible (their White Natural Versatile Plastic material does also take a lot prep) but the issue is in this scale most homespun printers are not currently able to print anything bigger than accessory bits. Some such as PDF Models do print 16mm narrow gauge bodies in slot together pieces which is perfectly fine, but with the exception of Marston Models' 08 shunter I'm not aware of any prototypes in our scale that are finished and commercially available. If you or anyone reading this do however, or even concerning accessory parts, then this is the place to conveniently list them

I can produce wagon bodies in Gauge 3 they are blown up from my 7mm/G1 (1/32) range. I can fit a 16ft long body on the build plate. Have a look at the web site for full range. G3 is currently a special and will not be listed on the list of scales so if there is something that you want please contact me.

There is also an increasing number of solid model files on the Gauge 3 wiki (www.gauge3.info). The site is being reconstructed at present, but when it is up and running again it should be a useful resource.

Might be a while before I start home printing but it's a most worthy undertaking Ian.

I'll drop a PM for the Ashbury coaches in a bit Marc but before that would your Furness brake van be workable in G3? From what I can gather it should just fit without the buffers but not sure if the height would be too much against a typical wagon.

Right O my Shapeways package arrived today.

Minus the 20% off for Cyber Monday and then with yesterday's import charge the total was £398.56.
The body of the old Wisbech & Upwell luggage van is definitely achievable in scratch build form but still nice to have a convenient print option for the small prototype,

while the coach I would never start!

I'm in the process of test printing a G3 version of the L&Y Batery Electric Locomotive (BEL). I have all the .STLs and will be writing a short assembly guide as a PDF download. The intention is that once we've checked that it's all Ok, the files will be made available on the G3S Website for anyone interested to download.

This YouTube shows the loco running... G3 L&Y BEL & wagons

The photo below shows the G3 vs G1 the version.

It is so lovely - so I have to ask - will it scale to 7mm for 32mm gauge?

I'm sure the loco itself would scale down to 7mm Bill but the current motor arrangement might be very tight for 32mm gauge. It uses N20 (6v 100RPM) geared motors (which are 25mm long exc the shaft) to drive the axles via a further 2:1 spur-gear arrangement. It might be adaptable but if so, would be very tight fit I think. However, I'm sure you have other ways to motorise 7mm locos that would fit the model.

No doubt the Shapeways price tag will be too steep for those reading this but just in case anyone is interested in a LB&SCR E2
for a self-Christmas present have asked Sparkshot to enlarge his body shell to Gauge 3 in advance of Cyber Monday's 20% off for orders over $200. In the interest of trying trim down the cost a little he will be printing the smokebox door, funnel, dome and safety valve cover on his home printer while the ejector pipe and roof are to be scratch built.

Have also asked for the frame unit to be enlarged, but again to save a little on the cost the frame spacing will be left to complete at the workbench. The aim will be to add suspension to at least one of the wheel sets after sussing out the motor arrangement but was personally happy to keep the rigid axle boxes as designed for now (would be easy for him to remove if you wanted to still go with resin frames over a metal alternative though).
