Next up two of 2857. This was condemned at Neath in April 1963, so only just after 2807 above. It was stored for six months before sale to Woodham Bros. It was purchased for preservation in May 1974 and went to the Severn Valley Railway with 7325. I understand that the loco is currently operational at least until July 2022. For those interested the site Preserved British Steam Locomotives contains many more details about the loco than I can include here.

Cracking picture Brian, a nice shot of the injector, which is usually really difficult to pick out from normal viewing angles

Thanks Mick. I'd not picked up that (relatively) easy to see injector previously. I wonder if it was still there when the loco left the yard.

We're now into the set I took the following year, 9th November 1968. It was my last visit to Barry and all the following photos were all taken on the same date.

To start with an attempt at something arty farty. I didn't note details at the time, although it looks GWR to me.

Unknown GWR Loco. Barry. 9 Nov 68. copyright FINAL.jpg

The second loco today is Departmental No 29, otherwise known as 61264. This was another of the lost causes on account of its poor boiler condition and blue asbestos but, as we know, was resurrected from the dead. It seems that in the early days the erstwhile GCR was the patron saint of lost causes with this, Boscastle and 71000 in the works.

61264 was used as a train heating boiler at Colwick, hence the departmental number and was withdrawn from capital stock in November 1965, final withdrawal coming in July 1967. It arrived at Barry in October 1968. It moved to the GCR in July 1976. It returned to duty in 1997 and is currently operational on the NYMR.

The photos in these very cramped conditions were taken simply because it was the only ex LNER loco in the yard and was, at the time of the photos, unlikely to be restored.

Continuing the theme of 1968.....

2807 we've seen before. I'll not repeat the details which were on post #1

The same applies to 2861 but on post #9.

This is one we've not seen previously, though. 3817 was at Banbury and withdrawn in August 1965. It was one of the few unfortunates and was scrapped at Barry in 1973.

Good point, Larry. I was about to make the same point. I thought it was only we modellers who got ride height issues like that.

I'd noticed the apparent difference in cab heights too, Larry. I don't have the designed heights of the cabs to know whether this was down to the 2-8-0 being worn down by hard grind and broken springs or whether it was always thus.

Two more 2-8-0s here which I didn't photograph in the previous November.

3850 was withdrawn from Croes Newydd shed in August 1965. In 1980 it went to the West Somerset Railway. Restoration took until 2006. It is now undergoing overhaul at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

This is 3855, also withdrawn from Croes Newydd in August 1965 although there's at least one photo of the loco working (at Chirk) supposedly in September 1965. It entered the scrapyard in October the same year and left for the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway in August 1987. It moved to the East Lancs Railway in 2008 where it is currently undergoing restoration.

I've just looked at some drawings. Off a weight diagram the 28xx is 12'111/4" to the highest point (the chimney), and, from a dimensioned diagram in Russell, the Castle is 13'31/4" to the top of the cab. (2884, from a GA, is 13ft to the top point of the cab). The photo seems to me to be a bigger gap.

That cab height difference looks a little more than a couple of inches but appearances can always be deceptive. Thanks for checking that, though, Simon.

We've seen three of these locos previously. Here's the one we haven't. It's large prairie 4141, withdrawn from Gloucester Horton Road in March 1963 but didn't reach Barry until November 1964. It moved to the SVR in January 1973. It steamed at Llangollen in 1998. It's currently under overhaul again at the Epping Ongar Railway.

Here's 4247 again, last seen in post ~30 so details will not be repeated here.

We've seen 4930 previously too, in post #38 and 5900 and 4983 in post #58.

A couple of these we've seen previously, and a couple we haven't - or maybe not.

4979, Wooton Hall, was an Oxford engine at the end of its career being withdrawn at the end of December 1963. It arrived at Barry in June 1964. It left Barry in October 1986 bound for Fleetwood. It is currently under restoration by the Furness Railway Trust at the Ribble Steam Railway.

4979. Barry. 9 Nov 1968. copyright FINAL. Photo by Brian Dale.jpg

Here's 5029, Nunney Castle. Details appeared in post # 43. This time it's next to what I believe to be one of the NBL Warships, probably D601.

5029. Barry. 9 Nov 1968. copyright FINAL. Photo by Brian Dale.jpg

This is a Castle I initially thought not previously photographed. I've recorded this as 5056, Earl of Powis, which was withdrawn from Oxley in November 1964 but that loco was scrapped at Cashmores in February 1965. There's a clue about its identity, though as it's complete with tender and these were being sold off to steel works by 1968. Although it's clearly been moved since the 1967 photo by looking at the tender in front and the one behind I think this is actually almost certainly 5043, Earl of Mount Edgcumbe which was shown in post # 48.

Finally 2-6-0 No 5322, details about which appear in post # 54.

Here's two of the small 2-6-2 tanks we've not seen previously - well, a comparison of BR totems.

First is 5538. It was withdrawn from Shrewsbury in October 1961 (the "Preserved British Steam site proposes that it was withdrawn from Newton Abbot but another source advises Shrewsbury. Make your own choice). For details of a varied life after Woodhams I suggest you look at 5538 It's rather too complicated to summarise here. However, the loco is at present in the Flour Mill where it is undergoing restoration.

Edit: I've reversed my details about the final shed. On checking relevant Locoshed Books the evidence supports withdrawal from Newton Abbot. It was certainly a long time Cheltenham resident and from January 1960 until withdrawal in October 1961 moved to five other sheds including Shrewsbury on the way.

The second is the totem only from 5542. It was withdrawn from Westbury in December 1961. It was extracted from Barry in 1976 and went to the WSR where it returned to steam in 2002. It is currently operational based on the South Devon Railway.

Another of the 2-6-2s not photographed previously, and a couple of 0-6-2Ts, one of which was.

5572 was withdrawn from Laira in April 1962 and it left Barry in August 1971 for the GWS Taunton Depot. Restoration was completed at Didcot where it steamed in 1985. It's now on static display at Didcot.

0-6-2T 5634 is another I've defaulted on with inaccurate notes because it was scrapped at Birds Morriston in December 1964. I think this might be 6686 - I've looked at other Barry photos but have found none including 9F 92085 in the background which would be the clincher. 6686 was written up in post # 59 and any help in getting an accurate ID for this photo will be appreciated.

Edit: This is NOT 5634 but as Daifly has kindly established is actually 6634 which was withdrawn from Pontypool Road in April 1964. The loco was purchased from Barry in 1998. Following a convoluted life awaiting restoration it's now at Peak Rail - still awaiting restoration.

5634. Barry. 9 Nov 1968. copyright FINAL. Photo by Brian Dale.jpg

I'm sure the ID on this one is correct as 5637, previously shown in post # 58.

You've cracked it, Dave. In transferring the written info (now destroyed) to the photo I've transposed the first "6" for a "5". This makes the loco 6634. I'll make an edit of the entry above to put matters right and also correct the info with the photo itself.

Continuing a theme here's another wrongly identified as 5663 which was withdrawn from Radyr in August 1962 and scrapped at Cashmore's in the October. I've again been through my photos and can't make a match to it. There are few clues in this one but I'll do some more investigation - unless daifly gets there before me!

Here's a rather lazy and first thought. Could I have made a number transposition again in which case this could be 5643?

5663. Barry. 9 Nov 1968. copyright FINAL. Photo by Brian Dale.jpg

I'm on firmer ground with 5900 which was detailed in post # 58.

5900. Barry. 9 November 1968. copyright FINAL. Photo by Brian Dale.jpg

The same goes for 5967 - details in post # 58.

5967. Barry. 9 Nov 1968. copyright FINAL. Photo by Brian Dale.jpg

Then 5994. See post # 58 for this one too.

This photo from August 1968 shows 5643 sandwiched between a 72xx with the vertical bunker handrail and what I think is another 56xx. Your photo from November 1968 shows your mystery loco between another 56xx and a pannier. It has also lost its safety valve cover in the intervening couple of months. It could still be 5643 but I’m looking for another candidate!

Hi Dave. I reckon that's the loco. Circumstantially, from the evidence of my own photos, the loco in front could be 9466, also photographed on the same day. The footsteps on one side and plain bunker sides on the other would support this. Also it can be seen that the 56XX behind 9466 (photo to be on here some time soon) is missing the safety valve bonnet. It makes sense too, from the evidence that I have a tendency to transpose numbers. I'll edit the original post to make a note but will go with 5643 unless someone knows differently. Thanks again for your research.

The next one is royalty - 6023, King Edward II. It was withdrawn from Old Oak Common or Cardiff Canton, depending on which source is your reference, in June 1962. It was unfortunate in having the rear driving wheels cut at Barry following a derailment making it one of the "mission impossible" locos. Nevertheless it left Barry in December 1984. In January 2011 it ran under its own power. It's currently awaiting overhaul at Didcot.

And here's 6024, King Edward I, withdrawn from Cardiff Canton in June 1962. It arrived at Barry together with 6023 and left in 1974 for the unlikely location of Quainton Road. In February 1989 it steamed again. I understand the loco to be currently towards the end of an overhaul on the West Somerset Railway.

For today mostly Manors. Why I didn't photograph any on my first visit I've no idea. They were probably hidden.

Here's 7802, Bradley Manor. It was withdrawn from Shrewbury in November 1965. It was rescued from Barry in 1979 originally to provide spares for Erlestoke Manor, however it was restored by 1993 on the SVR. It is currently under repair at the SVR.

7802. Barry. 9 Nov 1968. copyright FINAL. Photo by Brian Dale.jpg

Here's 7821, Ditcheat Manor, also withdrawn from Shrewsbury in November 1965. It arrived at Barry in May 1966. It left Barry in June 1981 and restoration was completed at Swindon in 1998. It's been on display both at the Great Western Museum in Swindon and a retail park but I'm now told is under overhaul at the WSR.

Next is 7827, Lydham Manor, also withdrawn from Shrewsbury but in October 1965 arriving at Woodham's in May 1966. It was returned to steam in March 1973 and is currently under overhaul at the Dartmouth Steam Railway.

7827. Barry. 9 Nov 68. copyright FINAL.jpg

7827. Barry. 9 Nov 1968. copyright FINAL.jpg

The last Manor is 7828, Odney Manor, also withdrawn from Shrewsbury in October 1965. It arrived at Barry in May 1966. It left Barry in June 1981 and was restored at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway by December 1987. It's currently operational on the WSR.

Finally 9466 last seen in post # 69 where you can find details.

When I was an Oswestrian the Manors were still very much in evidence at 89A so I have always been pleased that so many of the 30 survived. Like the moguls they were to replace, the design of both leaves nothing to be desired, well balanced, fleet of foot and with tremendous performances on the Cambrian main line.

Unlike the Machynlethh Manors, with their white buffer heads, the Oswestry shed kept theirs in natural metal/rust/oil. I preferred them that way.
