Ex. CR 1338.

1338 was at Cardiff East Moors until it closed in 1926, moving to the Rhymney Railway shed in Cardiff Docks before moving again to Cardiff East Dock shed when it opened in 1931. Placed in store with its sister 1339 from May '32 to May'34 when 1338 was brought back into use. 1339 was less fortunate and cut up in June 1934. A spell on loan took 1338 to Landore before a transfer to Taunton and outstationing at Bridgewater Docks in 1943 where it spent the years until being replaced by a diesel in 1960, whereupon it moved to Swansea East Dock until withdrawal in September 1963. As far as I can tell, it was never based at Canton.
1205 was the ex-ADR prairie at Canton in the early 1950s having been transferred there in April 1951 from Llantrisant and was withdrawn in January 1956.

Thank you David, we couldn’t have asked for a better service history.

Wild Swans Cardiff book has a photo of 1338 on Canton. The caption says she was in Canton due to the withdrawal of 1205 (the ex ANSWD&R prairie) before heading to Taunton. 1205 succumbed in 1956 so she must have been there until something else bigger, in this case a 15XX transferred from Severn Tunnel Junction, could replace 1205 for the longer run.

The Engine History Record for 1338. Not much room in there for a return to Cardiff in the 50s.

It was having a Heavy General repair at Swindon from end-55 to May 56. The caption may not be correct.

Appologies for the awful quality of the picture, but there is the picture showing 1338 and a bonus snap of 1205. The location is roughly between the main shed and the eastern coal stage which is still partly standing in the depot yard. The houses are on Ninian Park Road. I'm guessing it must have been during the period it was under Swindon Pool, as 1508 was shifted to Canton shed pilot circa 1956.

I have no problem with the location, but the date and sequence of events is most unlikely. 1338 was stopped on 19th December 1955 and returned to service on 9th May 1956. Here it is just ex-works on 6th May 1956 awaiting refitting of the safety valve cover.

And in colour from the opposite side same day.

The condition of 1338 in the photo in Hodges book is not consistent with a 1956 or later date. 1508 was transferred in during May or June 1956 (dates vary).
In 1962, the cycling lion was still clearly visible.

I’ll phrase what I wrote earlier more strongly. The caption IS incorrect in several respects!

I’d say the last picture is Swansea East Dock shed. The houses in the background are still there as is Kilvey hill behind. The shed yard is now under the widened Fabian Way approach road at the SA1 junction.
Note the lack of trees on Kilvey hill. All vegetation was killed by the pollution over many years from the various industries in the Lower Swansea Valley, the last being Rio Tinto’s Spelter works (zinc). Kilvey hill is now buried under a Forrest of pine trees but previously, I can remember on walks up the hill there were many bomb craters from WWII attacks on the docks and local industries.

Ps, that bell needs polishing! The Crymlyn A Shop foreman won’t be impressed if he sees the state they’ve left his engine in. :(

Nevertheless, she did get to 'diff in the 50s, whether linked to 1205 or 1508 though seems veiled in mystery.
