I've always had a soft spot for the 73's I remember taking a trip round Stewarts lane in 1991 or 1992 to cop a load of them and then to Victoria to see them on the Gatex
Don't forget Jeff these are electro diesels so can run on there engine.

Certainly not an exciting looking loco, and with no third rail, the point of preserving one escapes me.

errr? the 600hp diesel engine makes them *quite* useful, ask the WT'er responsible for getting one to Birmingham NS vice a 47!!!!

Brian, I think 120 & 135 were May 21st not August 21st on the Portsmouth - Manchester service, they failed at Banbury and 25194 took over to Birmingham New Street....according to the great wide web;)

Here's a small list of 25194 workings, scroll down to May 21st 1982 which has some details of what could be the train you saw.

Nice photos none the less:thumbs:

Don't know what I was thinking of when I thought mine were taken on in August when it quite clearly states May on the pictures

Anyway I have dug out my spotting book for 21-5-82 and here is the evidence that 73120+135 was on 21-5-82.

What an eclectic mix of types there was in those days:thumbs: , my spotter years were late 78 to 82ish and we thought it'd never change.

I wonder if the youngsters today think the same thing with what they have now? Probably not, as most if not all will be 'plugged in' to the gen and be fully aware of current trends and possibly future ones, back then it was all word of mouth and monthly magazines.
