Hi there.
Just discovered this site and decided it looks a good place to hang out (figuratively speaking).
My name is Andrew Ullyott and I model in both P4 and EM.
I have a soft spot for the Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Railway, having built a model of Weston some time ago and now embarking on a model of Clevedon, both in EM.
I also have a fondness for Cornish railways, especially those in china clay country and have a P4 layout 'Wheal Elizabeth' which is presently out and about.
Long term, the plan for the next layout (well you've got to really) is Cheddar in P4.
Although a Yorkshireman by birth, I've lived most of my life in Somerset, hence my leanings towards things Western in general!

Greetings!

I'm still a relative newcomer here, but I was made welcome really quickly. I suspect it will be the same for you.

Welcome.

Having studied your avatar, I can now declare with some authority that the blackening of railway bridge arches in the west country was not, as generally assumed, caused by the smoke from steam locomotives - but by the exhaust from Western class diesel locomotives. Not many people know that.

Hi Andrew, welcome aboard.

I'm going to ask a potentially risky question I always wanted to ask in another place but never did, fearful of the furore.

You are one of the few people that I know of (emphasis on the I) who has produced high quality layouts in both EM and P4. Do you have a preference? And if you do, why?

Feel free to ignore the question on the grounds that its doing that matters, not saying.

Hi Jon
Thank you for your kind comments.
No worries about the question, though it's a tricky one to answer quickly. Like so many things it depends.

I guess I prefer the look of P4 wheels and track, it being closer to the prototype.
I prefer the tolerances EM allows with the deeper flanges though.
I definitely prefer EM when all the stock's fallen off Wheal Elizabeth for the umpteenth time at a show (usually because I didn't align the cassettes in the fiddle yard properly). Then again, I could change the wheels to EM and pull out the back to backs if it really bothered me.

I joined the EM society first and built in EM first because I didn't trust my abilities to work in P4, though it's something I aspired to. I don't know why. Maybe the challenge. Maybe peer pressure? As it is, getting the chassis square and the wheels quartered is a requirement whatever the gauge.

I don't support the prejudices that P4 must be better than EM, or OO. There's some mediocre P4 out there and some truly excellent EM & OO. And I don't prefer 4mm over 2mm or 7mm for that matter either. I like good modelling irrespective of scale. Some of the 2mmFS stuff is just mind bending.

It's a shame that people get so entrenched when it comes to modelling, because I think we can learn a lot from each other without getting into slanging matches. Nothing wrong with having an opinion, but that doesn't mean we need to see some of the stuff that goes on.
