Hi Ian, thanks for the info. Sounds just right  . If you go over the top with the railway theme then it ends up causing arguments with the wife :headbang: So thats the way i had approached the garden railway. Luckily she was ok with my plans  . Please keep the pics coming, i look forward to the next installment

We have planning permission for a new kitchen on the back of the house and it will cover the living room french doors these I hope will aquired for the shed and used in place of the rotten double doors.

I know its more expense but have you ever entertained the idea of a brick built railway building mate instead of the shed?

regards,

Mark

Brick building a shed is a thought that I have contemplated but its also something that is on hold at the moment as it requires alot of ime and energy with a miniture her indoors running round loose it aint possible at the mo :headbang:

Hi Ian, what sort of board did you use ? is it chipboard ?. Have you just nailed the roofing felt on to the boards or did you stick it on as well with the bitumin stuff ?. The reason for all the stupid questions is i hope to get some board fitted onto some of the posts soon and want to get it right as i,ve never built a garden railway before. Then i hope to lay a little track so i can get a little bit of theropy of playing trains  Even though it will only be a straight line of about 20'. Still its progress

Sorry the reply is late I decided early on that the structure was going to be very strong and constructed or should I say over engineered. The pillers are mostly constucted of 12" square brick construction with the void filled with cement as bricks and mortar are good in compression (load bearing) but do not like any kind of tension(twisting or pulling) forces at all. The boards are designed to take alot weight i.e me(the fat one in the pictures) there was a danger they may break if the weight was not distributed well. The boards themselves sit on 2"x2" runners which in turn sit on 2"x2" bearers secured to the top of the pillers at the end of the bearers there are supports running to mid way up the pillers to support the overhang. The boards themselves are 3/4 external chip board coated in tar with roofing felt on top when we construct the next lot of boards I will post some pictures.

The whole railway has been designed with ease or maintainance and my old age in mind I aint got to bend down

Hi Ian, thanks for the info, that has given me lots to think about  . When it comes to bending i'm with you on that one, the body just shouts out "bend i dont think so" so i too have opted for height of 4' in the shed and 3' around the garden ( this is because the land slopes down from the house to the shed
I look forward to the next pics

It's a scene from that new film - 'Saving Private Ploffy'

And I suppose I'm to blame for you now building a brick train shed instead of the original wooden one?
