Brilliant Rob looking forward to this, the hint photos already look full of atmosphere.
Cheers
BTW totally get popping over here.
Less is more as in comments and steering the thread mostly straight and narrow!

The main problem with the Hornby Pecketts {0.4.0} is the clearance between the crankpin on the front driver and the slide bar. The two really are a gnats todger away from coming together, causing the loco to bind at that that point. This will give the impression of the loco having a regular tight spot at a particular point in the proceedings. Add into this the effect that occurs when having more tension on one pick up than the other. This can push one wheel closer to the slide bar thereby reducing the already small clearance and increasing the likely hood of a tight spot.

Having spent a bit of time fettling these little chaps, I appear to have two that will run quite well in both directions....I am actually quite anxious about using these Pecketts but I am hoping they will be okay.

I do have a third but for now will rely upon the two 'works' green Pecketts for the new layout.

One thing that has struck me regarding the next layout is period.

The Pecketts were so long lived that it opens up a few possibilities. One of these is the prospect of an early post - grouping layout.
Not sure of the exact period as of yet but a pre-1930 Somerset layout springs to mind. The date is significant in that I could run a S&DJR Blue Jinty should I decide to include a 'mainline' company......

Mmmm

Anyone for some late night Peckett rustling?
Keep an eye out for a couple of low loaders with no headlights!

I have succumbed to ordering a Tytherington Stone Co liveried W4.
Regarding your fettling experiences, what about inserting split shim washers to the front axle to remove all side-play?

I'm tempted by the Tytherington W4 myself. They are nice little chaps and a Peckett rarely offends.

I know others elsewhere have advocated shimming using plasticard washers. For now, these two seem fine without, as does my PLA example.

I'm looking forward to getting started on the layout itself. I have a few ideas but until it's there in front of me, I find it's tricky to work out. However, that is the beauty of having the buildings to play with. They can be plonked down and moved around until they look about right.

The path of least resistance, Rob.

Can’t say I blame you.

Perhaps you should name them Sheep, Ewe, Ram, Lamb etc...

No need to thank me for the suggestion.

Those buildings look smashing, I can see you making great use of them on this next project.

Rob, I'm sorry to hear that the Peckett's don't run as required and maybe its already been considered, but is it worth speaking to Hornby and sending them back to them for "tweaking ?".

The two that I have needed a good running in, one of which was slightly jerky to start but now both perform as expected.

Oh! And watch out for the very delicate whistle on top of the cab roof ! Don't ask how I know.

Hi Grahame.

No, they're fine and run as you would expect.......after I had a fiddle. I'm really quite pleased with them.......and yes, I have had the whistle issue. I'm looking for a brass replacement for all three.

RT Models do the whistle with a brass dome but seems to be a bit of a supply issue at present.

Still contemplating what period the next layout will be set in.

I pulled out one of my blue Jinties earlier...

Does this mean that you now have a 'flock' of Peckett`s.

There all very nice ,especially the six coupled one;and a good job that there`s not a RTR version avalible in O to,otherwise i might have sucumb to one.. (say`s he looking at umpteen unmade kit`s in UK & US O...)

Keep it coming Rob,enjoying all the pictures.

Happy to hear you've got the running sorted out, there's nothing more frustrating on a new loco eh !

If and when you do find something suitable I would be interested to see please .

Morning all.

Here are a couple of really poor images of the work in progress on the next chapter.

Conceptually Darlings, this is an industrial backwater quietly returning to nature. Everything is plonked down and these photos are of the one end of the layout.

There will be quite a bit of green stuff hereabouts which I'm hoping will contrast nicely with the dark buildings ( which will be tinkered with) and the rusty wriggly tin things.

Plain backscene, usual lighting. Little engines and other ( hopefully) cool stuff.

I hope you get the picture........ish.

I do indeed, Rob.

Definitely one of yours - even at this embryonic stage.
