7mm Sentinel Y1/1 and LNER Y7

A couple of easy projects across the WB recently whilst I recover from my latest op (Cataract removal)


The Y7 is a 'Big Jim' kit with modifications made to the rear of the cab by the North Sunderland Railway and a Sentinel Y1/1.


For anyone thinking of getting into loco kit building, the Y1/1 is a perfect starter kit. It comes complete, (wheels,motor, gears, delrin drive, nuts bolts wires, self contained sprung buffers, transfers for BR Departmental loco 37 and brass and w/m castings etc). Everything you need except for solder, flux and paint, and can be built in a weekend, although as a beginner, a couple of weeks would be more realistic.

I have been medically advised to avoid spray painting for a couple of weeks until the eye is fully healed so it looks like some hand painting till then!

Would you let us know the manufacturer of the Y1 please, Sandy? Those castings look very good and superior to those on my kit when purchased. But that's not a complaint - I think it was £70 all in!

Hope the eyes are better soon. Mrs D had both done in one op last year.

Hi Brian, The eye is dong well so far. It was the steroid implants that I had for another eye issue that caused it to grow quickly.

The Y1/1 is a Walsworth Model but I doubt that your one is the Y1/1 as I am not aware that a kit was ever produced. It is more likely that you have a Y1/3 which is a different model and the castings are different. Walsworth also do the Y1/3 and castings for that are available.

Mine is, indeed, a Y1/3, but also from Walsworth. The castings needed quite a lot of fettling but the completed model was very satisfying, amazingly good value and an extremely capable performer, far exceeding the prototype in hauling power. There were some limitations but all the major parts fitted perfectly well.

Hi Brian, I suspected it was. I understand that the Y1/3 is in the process of being upgraded and modernised, as it was originally hand drawn many years ago before CAD.
