The Plank (As yet unnamed)

I posted a 'hello' in the introductions section and a couple of members asked for some photos of my 5 foot by 15 inch OO gauge Ingelnook type layout. As yet it does not have a name and it is in a very early stage of construction:

The layout:

The very, very simple control panel:

The plan is that it will be based on the South Wales area in some way and, although now running on DC, will be DCC when and if funds permit.

Please be gentle as it my first layout ..................................

Should have mentioned - the baseboard is 3/4 inch exterior grade plywood on a frame of 2 inch by 1 inch pine. It is not exactly the lightest baseboard in the world but my first baseboard warped so I was determined that the mark 2 would be built like a tank............

The points are switched with Seep point motors. The toggle switches on the control panel select point direction and the pushbuttons operate the point motors.

Don't worry about it, Jon... in fact it is nice to see someone who's just starting out doing things the best way for a first layout  - start small & simple, and get things running smoothly first - the big Railway Empire can come later  , when you've got the basics, instead of taking on a massive layout straight away and getting fed up when the enormity of the task becomes clear :headbang: ....

Keep it up mate!

seconded Tipton is not the first I have built, but as big layouts go it's a bit of a monster. I started with an oval on the bedroom floor and ended up with a smaller version of Crewe when I was a youngster now (time permitting) using everything I learned earlier, the main one being Rome was not built in a day it has calmed me down a bit and a little word called planning became the watch word and yes there is still tons to do and yes I am still learning but watching some of the layouts on this forum has given me some wonderful idea's. Who says small and uncomplicated isn't beautiful

Keep going my friend you will get there in the end and you will make a cracking job of it

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I chose a small and uncomplicated layout for a first attempt for the very reasons you have mentioned. For me, at least, it is much better to build a shunting plank and practise modelling techniques etc than to start something larger and then get put off by the magnitude of the task ahead.

The plan is to build a small Welsh branchline station with a single track engine shed and very basic facilities. The layout will be populated by a GWR tank engine or two, a few coal wagons and probably one coach.

Have bought some cardboard building kits for the plank:

Superquick kits platform, platform buildings and a goods shed.

I put the platform together the other day and was very pleased with the ease of construction and the finished product so I have now bought the other two buildings.

Took me about two days to build the platform (I am a slow worker and like to check many times before cutting or gluing).

Will post some pics when I have finished the buildings.

Been busy with some coffee stirers: have made a barrow crossing and two coal cells (staithes?) - i think staithe is a 'modelerism' for a coal cell - I read somewhere that a staithe is a jetty used to load coal on to boats.
Anyway - here is a picture:

A belated welcome .

I'll be following the development of 'The Plank' as I have built several small HO layouts in the past.  Even one in a guitar case!  ;D.  I'm always intersted in the ideas and designs that evolve during the building process and look forward to seeing more pictures as progress is made.

Keep up the good work .

Thanks Chaps

I have scrapped the idea of the station due to lack of space on the layout and also because I have found an old photo of a coalyard that I like the look of. Plan is now to make a simplified model of the coal yard and base it in the 1930's or perhaps earlier. I built a card platform and station building kit but the models when placed on the layout looked err - cardboard. The upshot is that I now have a Hornby engine shed and water tower bought secondhand and need to buy or make some huts. Am working on the coal yard area right now.

For some strange reason the coal industry has always interested me.

Hi cupoftea

have you looked at the wills craftsman kits they imo are very good . i was going to say that those superquick card kits are a bit bland but didnt want to discourage you so early on in your build if you can scratch build your staithes and barrow crossing im sure you can have a go at the wills kits and maybe some scratch building using wills or slaters plastikard embossed brick, roof tile, timber, etc sheets .
