I had a kit like that once.

I've had one or two. If it doesn't work out, I've a full set of wheels and a motor etc that came with it. Probably worth more than I paid for the lot. I'll of just lost a bit of time, and gained some castings got the spares box.

Hi Peter
I wonder if Mike William's ever did a test build on this before producing kits for sale? If he did, why on earth would he release it without correcting these glaring errors. All credit to you for giving it a go, but imagine the poor novice who buys a simple 4 4 0 tender engine with inside valve gear thinking it will be a relatively easy build, and then having to deal with this :shit:. I'm sure you will make a nice model from it, but it really is a kit from the bad old days. Good luck!

Thanks Peter

I'm sure if he did anything it was just assembling the units. No way they were ever put together.
Unfortunately these kits still seem to exist in all scales. I'm sure the previous owner. Had trouble with the frames as one of the bush holes was out of line, and gave up. Because the tender and loco body were unstarted apart from some riveting. I'm looking forward to starting my Finney7 M7.

 Strewth

My admiration if you can get this sorted. It certainly makes scratch building an attractive option, if you can fix this then scratch building would be a walk in the park.

As it happens I like scratch building. Here is the last one I finished. I have another on the go and has been for a few years. Just painting needs to be finished.

Crew ready to work.

It also has had built moving inside motion.

Next scratch build on the agenda is an Adams X6.

Hi Peter , with the 2P , is it the camera or is the the cab roof and the rear of the footplate under the cab area sitting on an angle sloping down to the front .
Cheers Paul

Hi Paul. The answer is probably. It's all just resting together.

Progressing slowly with the 2P. Once I've got the cab sorted I will get the loco basics soldered together.
So what's actually been done?
Boiler has been shortened. Need to think about replacement boiler band.
IMG_20200124_105417067.jpg

The firebox was shortened at the front and the wrapper was cut down. The front and rear formers have been reduced in height too.

IMG_20200124_105351185.jpg
The cab front needed to be remade as it was to high and to wide. It couldn't be adjusted as the middle windows where to big.

IMG_20200124_105610359.jpg

Then remade again cos I had brain fade and med the side ones to big.

IMG_20200124_105634802~2.jpg

Next was the complicated sides and roof. The original was all over the place. The cut out too deep, can sides to high etc. I did make a bit of a mess with the step down being wrong, I was going to scribe and rivet. But a .005" overlay cured the problem. The splasher shape was copied from the firebox so hopefully will fit together.

One more overlay to do, assemble the cab and then all the units can be fitted together.

Well it's nice when a plan comes together. To my surprise the cab front and sides came together without problems. I need to pin down the footplate before final fitting but it looks ok so far.

The fit of the firebox is not to bad either. Again I'm sure once the footplate is fixed down an true, it will just be minor adjustments.

Looks like the worst of the loco is over, still lots to do but I can see where I'm going now. The tender can't be as bad surely. Will find out this week.

A riveting modelling project of one of the final batch of 2P's that came out under Stanier. I see you have the correct bevel rim wheels and you will no doubt be witting the web between the crank spokes and GWR style balance weights. It is odd ball prototypes that make modeling so interesting.

I had noticed that there was a web on them. It will be done. Not sure what is meant by GWR balance weights. Unless it's the big ugly ones with rivets or bolt heads on them.

Assemble has begun. Cab and firebox are semi tacked on. The fit in places is not quite right. Hopefully I can persuade to be better. Most importantly the smokebox ends in the right place now. The join between boiler and firebox needs a little work. The top needs closing up about 0.25mm. IMG_20200128_090733187.jpg

Before fixing the smokebox, boiler unit I need to do the front framing and front driver splashers. Surprisingly the one side done, actually fits in the right place. Considering I've adjusted the firebox and changed the size and shape of the cab.

IMG_20200128_111523370_HDR.jpg

I think it's beginning to look as it should. Even if the parts are trying their best to be something else. I'm hoping that the right splasher etc, will go together just as well as the left. We will find out tonight. If the sun's out, I want to do some painting tomorrow after getting a supply of thinners. More soon.

Minor problem found. I couldn't get the boiler, firebox, smokebox straight. After disassembly I found it was not the cab front not being square. But the firebox was very slightly a parallelogram. Trueing it up would make the unit short with tapered bands. So now making a new wrapper. Hopefully back to where I was in a few days.

Well, what can one say.

This is is not going down without a fight. New firebox done but not detailed. Nothing really want to line up. But I think it was down to the footplate. All seems better now that I added some brute force into the equation.

Just the cab and wheel splashers are tacked on the rest is just placed. Where I adjusted the splashers the right one has a bit of a gap. I think I will add a shim and file back to fit. If I make a replacement I will need to do both as the rivets would be noticeable different.

Here are the piccies, I think you will agree it was worth the time. To me it has changed the look of the loco for the better.

Now all soldered up. Not quite perfect and in need of cleaning. I think it will pass muster once detailed.

IMG_20200203_221333233.jpg

So on with the tender. To make sure I can actually do both parts. Starting with the inner sub frame. You will see it's a lovely matched pair of etchings.

IMG_20200203_221255313_HDR.jpg

Or will be once I have attacked them with a file.
