7mm Pete's workbench. LMS 2P or madness in a box.

I did quite a bit or artwork for etching on tracing film in owden days. But when it came to 4mm scale carriage sides, the drawings were unwieldy even at a mere 3X the finished size. Thank goodness for CAD.......... and patient operators!

Time to stop the 2P for a while. I need more information and my books are south of Rio at the moment in customs.

In the meantime I will go back to the Dean goods and a Rhymney railway 0-6-2. The laters book is also down south. So should be able to get ahead as I have instructions for this one.

This is where I am with the 2P.

Excellent job on the 2P Peter, very nice indeed...
Thanks George.
It's a labour of love really. But it cost me about the price of the wheels. So whatever happens I won't be out of pocket.
I'm now waiting for a book on them before I continue. But I think the hard part is done, apart from tender which I do not have a clue about yet.

Well, my books arrived, but didn't help. The 2P book only covered Midland locos. So nothing about the tender I needed. I did eventually find pictures and drawings enough on the net. Plus the instructions for Jim's 4F tender.

I've now made a new front, and adjusted size of some parts. I am in the dark a little about drivers side as to whether there was a lamp iron, like the one behind the water gauge.

This is the scratch built front.

I did find out after completing, that the coal plate curved into the shelf where the lockers are. I will live with it now.
I feel now comfortable enough to start assembling the body, but first I want to make some packers to sit the tank top etc on.

I just found out I may need to take the boiler off the loco. I forgot the cut out for the reversing rod. I think I can cut it out in situ, but not sure about lining it.

Right having made the new front, I had no excuse for not building the tender. Only my own lack of enthusiasm was stopping me.

The other evening I bit the bullet. Fitted the handrails to the sides, steps and lamp iron to the rear. Marked up the footplate as the half etched lines were to far apart for the body even before I made it a little narrower. These are fixed in place. The front is just tacked at the moment. I also added some bits for the tank top to sit on.

No the tank top was designed for a different front. So modification is the name of the game with this.
This is the the starting point.

IMG_20200408_210422427.jpg

This took a load Of checking and rechecking. But I eventually got it to fit. As you will see I scratch built the hopper sides.

Everybody seems to be producing vast quantities of model work. My time has actually dwindled, due to doing home schooling, SWMBO, being home and finding me more to do.

It also doesn't help having a kit to fight with. Well progress to date..
The capping, not really beading on this as it's on the top. This was all cut from sheet as there was nothing in the box for this.

IMG_20200415_194417319.jpg

The fire iron support and the coal rails are now on. The coal rails were a side and end but both the same hand. So some cutting and shutting was required. Hopefully this won't be seen. You will also notice I've had a bit of a clean up.

The front footplate is now in place, I did have to go back to the loco to sort that cab footplate out to get the height for this as I had no spacers. Brake and water standard are fix, as well as what I believe are the sanding leavers. I just need to do the fire iron rack, then I think it's just castings. But that's another story, yet to tell, after the fight.

Well that's it for now. Keep up the good work, and keep safe.

Unless you have a photo, 2P's never had coal rails on their fowler tenders. Or if they did it was extremely rare.

Well last night's challenge was to see if I could cut out, and fill in the reversing reach rod rebate in the boiler. That is without destroying the body and or taking the whole thing apart.
This is the result so I gave myself a pat on the back and a glass of wine.

The reach rod will be made to look better before fixing in place.
Just need a picture of the weigh shaft and bearings now.

This is the best I can do with the reach rod, bearings, counterweights etc. The weigh shaft bearings are a little forward of where they should be. But that is a compromise of finescale. I've moved the counterweights inboard since phot was taken. They interfered with the slide bar support. Which because of the lift links being slightly forward I may just move and have slightly shorter slide bars. They are only for show. So probably not notice, well, hopefully.

You will see the reach rod is now a better shape than the odd thing that came with the kit.

IMG_20200419_000126020.jpg

I have decided that I will just do the top slide bars as the other will be hard to see unless it falls off the track. But there will be a representation of the cross heads, piston rods and connecting rods.

Right, back to the frames. The brake gear was cast brass, and not to bad. But, it was sitting at the wrong angle, I could not get the hanger close enough to the wheels. Also they were actually a bit short according to the drawings. I made new hangers, used some etched shoes I had, and some cast hangers. The cross shafts were adapted, the pull rods from wire and a scratch built mount at the rear for the cylinder and cross shaft. As this is such a big item it needed to be there.

IMG_20200501_233517313.jpg

You will also see if have fitted the motor torsion bar under the ash pan. This will be hidden by the rear springs.

IMG_20200501_233509166.jpg

The front frames are a mess. So I've decided to put an overlay on from the front sand box forward. This led to a few problems, first being the bogie springs were to high, so the they and the compensation beams were adjusted. Centralising springs have also been added to reduce the front end flopping about in the breeze. To help with clearance the first inch of the frames has been tapered to the front by about 1mm each side. Seems to work nicely.
Both overlays have been marked up but only one cut so far. Making sure it works. I marked them out to the shape of the prototype. It needed a little more off in one or two places. I think it looks the business.

This is how the frames came to me after being butchered by the previous owner.

IMG_20200501_233412853.jpg

This is after a little playing around. It is just tacked in place. And pushes through my 1 in 5 test track crossing. I think they have B switches, I need to check.

IMG_20200501_233351696.jpg

It is coming along nicely now just these to finish at the front then the castings to add.

Just playing to see how it looks with the body resting on.

IMG_20200501_233623483.jpg

Here it is with the tender. I hope it looks as it should, everything tallies near enough with the basic dimensions. It will never be perfect, but I hope to the more knowledgeable it will pass muster.

IMG_20200501_233659315.jpg

Hopefully over the weekend the frames will be finished. The last few bits on the tender completed. Then it's the home run with the body. Which my be slow as there's lots of details not in the box.

For some reason I missed a post.

Here is why representation of cross heads and slide bars, not very accurate but looks ok in place.

Not very tidy but, it is straight off the press. Do not think it's bad considering it was made up on the hoof.
Here's top and bottom view.

IMG_20200425_202244619.jpg

Finally with the body in place. You can see what the finescale comprising can do. The weigh shaft is not far enough behind so the drop links are just in front of the motion bracket. I think I will live with this. I will continue to look as the build goes on.

I finished off the bogie by adding a representation of what I presume are the end covers for the side control. Also fitted side control springs from nickel wire. Stops the bogie bashing the frames, but more importantly helps lead the loco into curves and reduces front over hang.

IMG_20200508_234626386.jpg

IMG_20200508_234602600.jpg

Main frames are now finished ready for painting (didn't think I'd hear myself saying that).
So what's been fitted? Brake cylinder, sand boxes although one needs filling, previous owner was heavy handed with a soldering iron. Sanding pipes had to be scratch built. But I believe look better than just a wire coming out the bottom of the boxes. Finally the driving wheel springs, which came out of the spares boxes. They fit quite well with little modification. Though the rear ones should be a little shorter.

IMG_20200508_234522258.jpg

IMG_20200508_234539843.jpg

At the moment I'm playing with the wheels. I need to make 8 flanges, 4 plain inserts, and 4 balance weights. I'm hoping I do not loose the will to live. I'm struggling with them.
Well, I'm not sure if I finish the tender off, just lamp irons, fire iron rack and castings to go. Or whether I go back to the loco body.
