7mm Nevermoor - a phoenix rising.

At long last I have started work on the rebuilding of my small layout. This has meant relocating it from free-standing to a fixed position on the garage wall, the end result being another 300mm or one foot for those who like old money (like me) available. I decided to use as much of my old Neverwood layout as possible with the minimum alteration - some of you may have followed the 'Neverwood Chronicles' elsewhere in the past - then again, you may not have ........! The new layout will have a change of name and at present 'Noemoor' seems favourite.
The overall dimensions will be something in the region of 12'6" x2'0" when the additional carpentry is complete. Like it's predecessor, the layout will be laid in Peco SM32 track to allow the trouble free running of items with coarse scale wheels (standard scale if you prefer) such as my Ace Trains 5101 class 2-6-2T to name but one. As you may have already gathered, my approach is totally freelance with very broad parameters. I hope to run my layout using a Midlands based theme of a WR/MR overlap in the days of Steam and green diesels, with an alternative set of stock to run a mid 1930's LMSR option. It's all in progress and if it interests you watch this space. By the time of the next posting I have every hope that some photographs will be available. Until then - ;).

Hi Roger, I remember Neverwood. I hope the new layout is just as good having liked the 'freelance' approach to layout modelling. I hope you have some pictures of your progress soon. Cheers, Earl

Some progress to report at last. I have re-sited two of the original boards from the old Neverwood layout and yesterday managed to complete the electrical reconnection which work included some minor modifications and much needed repairs but basically retained the old sectionalised system which had proved satisfactory before. You will have gathered that the system is analogue - my opinion being that dcc on a mini-layout like this would be a very expensive addition to gain little or any operative advantage. The analogue system I employ is what I have used for many years. Also, bearing in mind that wiring is the part of layout building that I love to hate and there was an existing set-up, to quote our American Friends, it ain't broke, don't fix it. Some scenic modifications are obviously very necessary but I am sticking my neck out and publishing a photograph of my Dapol Jinty which I used to test out the sections for electrical defects on the reconnection - fortunately someone up there loves me and the test was entirely successful !!!!

7431 simmers in the platform as a gentleman greets his companion on platform one at Noemoor. The new lighting is casting shadows as the evening light fades. The locomotive has recently been arrived in the area from Crewe works, having visited to be renumbered from it's earlier five digit identity. and to benefit from a visit to the paint shop.

Back to real life - thus, having had some success with this initial foray in to the construction of Noemoor, work will continue with the extension piece and revised storage board, or fiddle yard. This latter will involve the total rebuilding of what was the old third board on Neverwood and will see the disappearance of the scenery once contained thereon. More news and pictures to come!

I have decided to revert to my original designation for this layout - it will in future be known as Nevermoor. Thus, as I cannot figure how to change the title here, I shall close this thread forthwith and start afresh using the name of Nevermoor for the title lead.
Thanks for bearing with me.

Changing the title is quite straightforward - for threads you have started the drop down menu that appears when you hover over 'Thread Tools' includes the command 'edit title' which does what it says (hopefully).

All best,

Many thanks Adam for your very helpful advice which I have put in to effect. I easily get confused with these new-fangled computer thingies!
Job now done - this thread will now continue under its new identitiy .;)!

A short report on the continuing construction of Nevermoor. A small infilling section has been constructed and installed between the former centre and number three boards of the old layout. That remaining board (number three) was completely stripped down to the frame and a traverser is currently under construction. It will be, like my carpentry, very basic but should be adequate for the requirements as foreseen for this layout. The overall result of the layout reconstruction has been an increase in the overall length available from 11ft 3" to a magnificent 12ft 1" :)! Every little helps......... Once the track has been laid and the traverser fitted and wired up, I shall report again, hopefully with photographs.

At last! The traverser section has been constructed - well it's more of a bodge job - all wooden, not cabinet makers standard by a long chalk but it works all right for me - and the wiring up has been completed. In the interests of simplicity and economy, together with not forgetting how much I dislike the job, I decided a sub-control for the traverser would be the easiest thing to do, and I already had the power leads wired to an exit din socket on the middle board. Thus leads to a simple three switch panel on the traverser board frame and bingo - it worked straight off! Knowing my luck with wiring and electrics, that was quite a surprise, but if your luck is running - ride it . I also found I could add a little board beyond the traverser itself giving a nine inch over-run feature. The track here is unpowered, the point being that at my age it is not unknown to have those odd 'magic moments' when you forget to stop the train in time. The said over-run will, I hope, obviate damage and derailment should said instance occur.
Here are a couple of pictures showing the station area and the extension, then the three road traverser.SAM_1865.JPG

Trial runs have been made and I can actually play trains once again after a rather lengthy absence from 0 scale running. Now comes the work which I shall enjoy much more, namely the modification and rectification of existing scenic effects and the creation of new ones. It may not be modelled to a specific prototype I admit, but I really enjoy an entirely freelance approach to my modelling and merely endeavour to produce something that is plausible. I tolerate the SM32 track as it accomodates not only my coarse scale models without problem but my finescale units too.

Please bear with me as I progress and hopefully I shall be able to establish the 'Nevermoor Chronicles' soon, reporting operations ans activities at Nevermoor - it's all in the mind, you know .

Glad to see the progress at last. Keep up the good work. My own layout is still at a complete standstill as I am awaiting the building of a new shed! Cheers, Earl

I have managed to have a brief operating session to check out the wiring, sectional isolation, traverser operation and the like. I principally used my coarse scale stock for this exercise although my Heljan class 25 can be seen as it underwent a brief test following repair. The whole operation turned out to be successful and I can now report that work is beginning on the scenic developments very much needed.
Some pictures of activities at Nevermoor follow:

This view will be what loco-spotters at Nevermoor will see from the overbridge at the station throat - when it is built! That is all part of the ongoing scenic construction. In the back-ground are a 41xx 2-6-2T and a class 25/2.

Thank you for looking - back to building that hridge now ;).

Although the main work recently has been destructive - removing old scenic effects mainly - I have added a little more to my traversing section in the form of two shelves. This enables the easy exchange of rolling stock to vary the consists of trains working in and out of the station and yard. Construction is simple and both materials and measurements can be varied to suit individual requirements. For those interested the actual shelves at Nevernoor are approx 1150mm x 30mm x 10mm (LWT) pse timber with a 25mm retaining strip on the front edge. My apologies for the poor lighting on the photograph but I believe it is clear enough to see the overall arrangement.

I hope this may be of interest - in the meantime, back to scraping up old scenery!!!!!!

I can't help feeling that those plastic cabinet joiners are most inappropriate for the job you've given them. I certainly wouldn't be putting a locomotive on the shelves!

I have not experienced any problems in the past with them Dave - I would agree that a small bracket would give more support, but as I normally only 'park' wagons on these shelves the actual weight upon one fully loaded is somewhat less than that of a locomotive. The use of locomotives in the picture were purely for illustrative purposes to show the potential of the arrangement for anyone who wished to adopt the idea for their own purposes. Thanks for pointing this out and for your interest.

Pusuant to the eventual compilation of a working timetable when I am running Nevermoor as a mid-1930's LMS operation - one of the variations I shall be using - I recently did a clearance test using my only tender locomotive - a 'Precursor' class 4-4-0, deemed to be working out it's final days on lesser duties - in the case of this test, the local pick-up goods. Just for the record I took a couple of pictures which may be of interest.

Ready to leave Nevermoor Goods.

On the traverser - a tight fit but a fit nevertheless. The wagons on the storage shelves are awaiting a step forward in time to when Nevermoor is operated in a British Railways period....:).
