7mm Millicent Street

Sometime later.....oh alright we have been busy with other projects.!!

However now we have taken the decision to retire and dispose of our current 7mm layout 'Hospital Gates' ....3 more shows this year and that all folks!;)

So the layout has been taken out of storage and the dust blown off it as we now have to make a concerted effort to finish said project if it is to become a viable replacement for our current 7mm trainset. Put the kettle on and stock up the bun cupboard!.

Even though the layout has been moribund work on the buildings and details which will go towards creating so much of the character of this scheme has been continuing. To the point where some now display a more or less finished look (Pub still needs name and brewery signage adding though!). Moor and Robson's Brewery methinks!

The cluster of structures (3 for 3 different local streets) which make up the Builders yard are also taking shape.

Inside and out!........... most of the inside is a scratch built as the outside. Hence the time some of them can take.

The buildings at the other end of he layout current scenic frontage are also shaping up.

P4190190 (2).JPG

A typical row of 3 terrace houses (common in Hull) , in our case with 2 converted to shops with change to both front and rear.

The end shop will be a shoe and boot shop and will be gaining 'Boot Repairs' signage as is still extant on the former shop that inspired it to this day. With the central shop likely to be a Bread-Cake shop (again something common to this area and which a few still survive trading to this day).

Experimenting and learning how to do all this weathered and faded lettering on the buildings. Not to mention the different brickwork finishes to them is taking me a while but given the level of finish we are trying to give this model of our home town I think its worth it.

Next up the somewhat run down corner local featuring the ownership of a now long gone local brewery.

You cant see here (the model has been built with lighting) but the interior is fully furnished on all floors (including a fully fitted bar, kitchen and bathroom (the latter two in the side you cant see). Plus the rear yard has the usual outside gents (and somewhat grim) facilities of the time.

A selection of hopefully better pictures of the latest structures which form the view block to the fiddleyard entrance.
pub1.JPG

Each building is base do an original local structure that existed or indeed still exists here in Hull.
pub2.JPG
Each consists a plywood shell, covered in slaters plasticard brickwork and with resin, laser cut or scratch built windows and details to suit.
pub3.JPG

The printers is based on one that existed for many year in Hulls old town (by the river)

pub4.JPG
Whereas, although our layout is set in 1967, in reality the prototype of the pub (noted as one of Hulls smallest) was actually demolished in 1926.

And now with completed signwriting and the final weathering finish to give it that drunk in look.

Pub7 (2).JPG

The original the pub is based on was a Hull Brewery Pub which was demolished in 1928. However it seems to take to the backstreet 1950's 'Moors & Robsons' finish we have given it.

Pub7.JPG
A spot bedding in, wiring up the lighting and a sprinkling of street furniature …… and then a whole lot more buildings to do the same way...……

Pens, pencils? :)

Oh yes …..you know us for wasting time creating the impossible...…..Steve will be creating fountain pens to go with those blotters.

In the meantime here's a preview of the office for the domestic coal yard.
co.JPG
The model is based on an original that existed at Botanic Gardens Station here in the city ……………..but with one or two small changes (as we have done with the other structures so far) which in this case was limited to changes around the arrangements of the windows and the window display which are lifted from a different but similar building.

co1.JPG
Despite the lightly built temporary nature of construction the original lasted much longer than the actual railway...…… surviving long beyond the closure of the station.
co2.JPG
Again built without drawings or even measurements - in spite of a lot of research that we know of only a single photo exists of the original that was taken long after it ceased serve a rail served coal facility.

The coal office now plonked into its intended home.....though it will be bedded in more in due time.
01.JPG
Hardly the first name in business promotion but (as with the real building) the retail face of the coal business it is.
02.JPG
03.JPG That footpath I crying out for a streetlamp...……..probably ex gas standard with swan neck electric top.
04.JPG
and just down the street buildings are beginning to spring up at the builders yard...….

any more of this and you might think we actually know what we are doing.

At the start of this thread you will find my rough sketch of the proposed look of the original 8ft cameo layout we had in mind for its intended education purpose. However as that didn't come to pass we (for that read me!) has had a rethunk and amended the layout to a more exhibition friendly (both in operation and visually for the public) 12ft scenic scheme which will enable us to work in several more distinct scenes inspired by 1960's Hull.

Although we have been somewhat occupied checking over Hospital Gates for its last two shows (and subsequent new home). Work is progressing.

Including yet more 'ghost signs' - something Hull still has many of today if you look beyond the modern facades. Almost faded out (the model is easier to read) - the signwriting actually says (M R Baker - Sanitary Engineer, Plumber, Painter, Gas & Hot Water Fitter & Paperhanger).;)

Plus trial fitting of clusters of structures which will go together (in this case) to make a builders yard.

Whilst elsewhere on the layout final planning and 'high tech' mock-ups are taking place.

Plus, with my way of working..ie getting fed up of explaining what will go where to the rest of the team! I have been turning the layout into a sort of giant 'build by numbers!':)

..and yes it was a level crossing seen on the concept sketch.....situated here. (yes that is a Beverley Bar bus!)
