Useful to know the chronological sequence of the photos - which came first - the malachite or the black.

Could the SR have carried out the major repairs after purchasing from the EKR and hastily returned it to service before repainting to black later?

Dave,

It never carried malachite. I've got photos both before and after the date of the O2 photo (July 49) and it's deffo in black. Look at the numbers; yellow shaded green (lighter than the base colour), not yellow shaded black (darker than base colour).

Point taken, however it did carry malachite in EKR days.

Just looked at the photo again. Did Eastleigh repair the bunker by placing a sheet over it as the shadow at the top beading looks slightly deeper or is it a repair/weld line. Or is the illusion caused by the start of the curvature of the rear of the bunker?

Failing that, a film/darkroom processing fault?

There's no record of it carrying Malachite; it was painted 'dark green' in 1917 when sold out of the LSWR (to the Royal Navy). There's a photo in Bradley taken in 1938 on the EKR, which shows it in a Urie-style livery. She rejoined the SR in 1946, in derelict condition - the assumption being that she wasn't repainted in EKR ownership.

The line you can see down the back is fresh paint, my best guess is a corner welded in and painted; it's also visible on the other side of the bunker in the photo in Bradley. A rear 3/4 view in the right period (which I don't have!) would be definitive.

Hi,

Well, Heyside is off on its travels....we are going to the Warley show at the NEC next year, in 2020. And for once, Heyside will be tichy compared to another O gauge layout attending! So, we are ramping up the building improvements, and generally improving the scenery. The running, control and signalling is fine, we have more than enough appropriate stock, so it's presentational from here.

I do have a few pics to add. The first is a pair of Halls:

and 3 Finney7 A3's:

Fantastic, the B17 is especially nice to see. Is it DMR or Sans Pareill?

And have a big soft spot for Western Hall's anyway..

Yay, when working the single-decker Higginshaw turnback, I always dashed down to the overbridge to see the procession of Gresley Pacifics on Rochhale-Manchester turns and if one was really lucky, a Western 'Hall' would be seen charging the bank up to Higginshaw gas works...By gum, them wer't days.;)

Seriously though, a beautifully finished collection of 'stray' locos.

Ditto to Larry's last comment. The locos in Roger's post are not of too shabby either.

I've not been to Warley for years, but it looks like I have a good reason to make the effort next year.

Cheers,
Peter

Other visiting locos at the Heyside post Xmas bash included a 9F, a King Arthur, a Midland Compound, a Jubilee & a Super D, but I believe the box Brownie ran out of film (or was it something to do with the wine ?) A great time was had by all, including other halves.
Cheers Steve

Also worth a mention at the Heyside bash was Richard's Duchess, painted & running. I believe he said it was 30 years in the making. It ran really smoothly, it had been built to fit a Crailcrest motor & gearbox, so that's what was fitted. It made me think how dcc chips have advanced now, so some can even power such a power hungry motor.
It reminded me of our early Heyside days, when the newly acquired ex exhibition Heyside layout had been cut down a little to fit Richard's basement & we had built a new fiddle yard covering just under half of the layout, along with considerable changes to the track around the station on the public viewing side. Running was just dc and Crailcrests were used in locos if there was space for them, while the smaller, powerful for it's size Ron Chaplin Red Arrow motors were used by some of us in preference to the Mashima 1833 as they had more power.
Then it was decided to go dcc. A wise decision as it turned out. In those early dcc days there was no sound & we found out by trial & error which motors could be safely powered dcc by which chips available at the time! The new helical gearboxes offered by Ron Chaplin & ABC gave us the opportunity to run low power consumption motors like selected, powerful variants of the Canon 1833 motor, as well as Maxons through these new very efficient helical gearboxes which gave very smooth, powerful loco performance.
Fast forward to the present & we have locos with great dcc sounds as well & can run those powerful Red Arrow motors too as I did in my Super D at the Heyside bash.
Progress indeed! To the future!

Steve, do you have a recommendation for a source of suitable sound for a Super D?

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony,

Sorry if it was not made clear, my Super D sadly does not have sound, I am just pleased to be able to run it again on Heyside as an occasional visitor, after considerable absence as it was left chipless to run elsewhere, being in weathered LMS livery. Perhaps my colleague & friend Tim, The Snapper, might have some suggestions.

Best wishes,

Steve

My two penneth' for what it's worth... YouChoos Super D sound. It goes into the familiar 2-beat and is what I am aiming to use in 4mm.

I also happen to use the youChoos LifeLike Stay-Alive kit with 17000uF Supercap and Zimo LS40x22X09 4ohm Dual Dumbo speaker.
