Following this with interest. I've had a go with double layered plastic with a laser where the process is to laser away the unwanted material.

Still working out the optimum settings for the small details as seen here on a scale wagon plate for the LMS region. It would benefit some dry brushing to bring the letters out but I'm working on making these RTR.

Quite pleased with this scale GWR signal box notice.

Once perfected I intend to put wagon plates on all my rolling stock. The plastic is 0.2mm thick and comes in several colour combinations.

Thank you to all for the information that you have offered here... as of this moment a "real, live, example" of the number plate or of the "G.W.R" plate has yet to surface. Sorry Dave (@daifly) about possibly mis-leading you, I shall see if we can post an example of a pure "number" plate to ensure that our quest is clear to all.

Out of the blue, totally unexpected, a "real live example" has surfaced over there , see here.

Chris Brown (@ChrisBr) has done some drawings of plates based upon our research into the topic and plates have been etched. The first wagon to feature the etchings is here , a delightful example of a typical GWR four plank open from the early Edwardian period. Sorry to mislead, the prototype of the model is illustrated with photos of both sides of the wagon and the result is a photographic assault on the brain for wagon no.10995 is an example of the rare knitting brake gear arrangement known as DC1X.

If you visit the Basingstoke Show (14th-15th March 2020) then you can see the wagon with the etched plates running on "Sherton Abbas" when Dave Stone (the builder) or either Chris Brown / myself can explain how to unravel the details.

regards, Graham
