The footplates on the rebuilt Rivers were lower and wider (as I've just discovered while contemplating a 4mm version...) as well as everything else, but a U of any stripe from an N is, well, it's not straightforward.

I did start converting a Bachmann N to a U about 10yrs ago. Soon realised that there were quite a few differences. The boiler is the same though...

Once you are decided what you're going for, George, let me know. I have (inevitably :)) photos of Ns and Us in BR days in my collection which might help avoid some of the peasant traps you could be drawn in to with the preserved locos.

That's very kind Brian, when the owner tells me l will inform you thanks again buddy 31791 was just picked out of the air without any thought it just looked right, even though it was a U. Hahahaha

You can be forgiven - the height of the running plate from the rail is similar and of course the cab spectacles are also much the same. It's caught me out before now...

No problems George. I would stick to one from the 31810 - 31875 range, the final batch of Ns in the 31400 - 31414 range had detail differences which from memory are not supported by the kit.

I have quite a lot of info collected on the N Class. Shout if you need anything.

I have both an N and a U to build for a client/friend once I complete the two/three Schools class locomotives....all from the David Andrews stable. Spent two hours this morning making and turning up parts not included in the kit for added detail.

I'll keep an eye on how you progress George

Hi George.

With a certain inevitability I don't have a photo of that particular loco. However, I have 15 of other members of the class which might be helpful. All were taken between about 1959 and withdrawal so not quite early enough for your chosen date but they may provide some useful info. All are record shots, so not much in the way of specific detail but quality of most is pretty good.

I'll try to get them on to WT this evening or maybe tomorrow.

Very nice George.

I think it would have be easier to add the lookout beading to the cab front in the flat, but I'm sure you will still make a good job of it.
Cheers,
Peter
