Ex CM&DPLR 29 has been returned to Crymlyn A Shop for its first service. Everything has been ok with the locomotive but advantage was taken to complete a few details. The cab rear doors were fitted (is there a correct name for these?), power class A painted on, the vacuum pump piston rod fitted and a regular crew allocated. It is seen here leaving Crymlyn A Shop.

Hi Davey
If you can buy, borrow or beg a copy of "When there was Steam" by Tony Barfield (ISBN O 85153 226 8) there is a chapter "The Gadget". It describes his firing this loco, then based at Kidderminster in the late 1950s , up the Tenbury branch and the "The Gadget" the nickname for the CM&DPLR.
There is also a photo of the loco.

Thanks Allen. I’ve looked on eBay and there appears to be 2 books with the same ISBM number but with different covers. Perhaps a later print run?
David.

Hi David
My copy is the BW photo of a Prairie on a goods train with the title block at the bottom half of the cover black print on red background. I don't know about the copy with the colour cover but assume possible a liter reprint.

Hi Allen. I’ve acquired my copy of Tony Barfield’s book and thoroughly enjoyed the chapter on his run with 29. It was obviously “a good ‘un”. Thanks for the tip.

David.

Hi David
Glad you enjoyed it. I knew Tony when we were in out teens. He used to come to the Hornby Collectors Association meetings in Kidderminster. Using O gauge clockwork, with his direction, there were correct loco & train formations with lamps and basic signalling. Toys used as real. After the railway he worked for a motor cycle dealer, then as a post man and a move to Cornwall. His last few years before finally retiring was driving a mobile library. We kept in occasional touch up to about 15 years ago. He has had classic motorbikes and cars for most of his life.
There was also another book with more of his memories "Panniers and Prairies"
Regards
Allen

Thanks Allen.
I have ordered a copy of "Panniers and Prairies" from eBay, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I've been a motor biker myself for over 50 years and, although I have no classic bikes, still enjoy long rides on my hog. In fact in July 2018 we rode a Harley across Route 66. The route was 2448 miles and we covered 2945 miles taking in the Grand Canyon and a few days in Las Vegas.
David.

Hello David
Found the photo at last. Your No 29 could have been coupled to a brake van like this. It is an old Hornby van from most likely the early 1960s and modifications carried out in the early 1970s. Repainted 3 link couplings, foot boards added and wheels changed for fine scale buy soldering pads on the inside of the axle box.

This photo is a close up and shows all the faults. At normal "cricket pitch" viewing distance it is not too bad and captures the image of a photo of the real thing.
