Prototype Criccieth Station

Two years ago I thought about modelling Criccieth on the Cambrian but Castles never went there (!) so I opted for something busier. But I did take 40 photos of the present day scene and these are posted on Flickr:

Criccieth Station

Reduced to a single line today the original track plan can be found in the Barmouth-Pwllheli book by Middleton Press. The station building is still there but leased to a local business.

The line was never busy but I think at one time there were LMS trains running through from Afon Wen to Portmadoc which would add some interest to the single line workings.

Nice photos. Couple of years ago I briefly considered a model of Criccieth too. One thing that stopped me was a lack of photos :headbang:

Me too.

Family hols in Portmadoc pretty much throughout my teenage years, learning to fire on Linda & Blanche, with Warren Shepherd & Phil driving.

Boating down the estuary. Borth y gest, Black Rock. Later, scuba diving, Bardsey, Nefyn; sailing & powerboating, Pwllheli, Llanbedrog, Abersoch, Nefyn.

And the odd motorcycle trip. :)

Happy memories!

I too spent my teenage years here in Borth y Gest and loved it, ending up stranded at the PYG on New Years Eve 1962/3. ByG hasn’t changed a bit. There are friends still here I knew back then. Amazing really.

Cricieth (Welsh spelling) is a lovely station, only 20 minutes from where I live, I am blessed to live in a beautiful part of the world, there are plenty of pictures out there, you just have to seriously google them, from what I have seen, the whole station and goods yard area is a rather compact affair, ideal for a project.

The road over bridge at the Pwllheli end of the station makes for a good scenic break, not sure what you could do at the Porthmadog end, probably a hole through the board end, cleverly disguised with some close proximity to the line buildings & shrubbery, I looked at the Cricieth plan once, as it does make for an interesting layout.

There are a few pictures in the "Return to Pwllheli please" book.

Best regards
Craig.

See also 'Scenes from the past No.4 : The Cambrian Coast Railway' by Bill Rear and Martin Williams. Foxline 1988.

Following nationalization, the London Midland Region commenced running through to Portmadoc, although workings were restricted. A Stanier 2-6-2T is illustrated taking water at Portmadoc in 1953. Also a picture there of Cambrian Railways 894 in 1954, it being scrapped later that year without ever carrying BR Tender markings.
