Can't beat a class 90, in all intents and purpose they were simply a class 87 with a new nose.
They've been through some changes over the years, not only on the WCML but the GEML as well. They came to Norwich Crown Point with I think over a million miles (maybe more) already on the clock and despite various TOC's, Crown Point has done a really good job keeping them serviceable and maintaining them to a good reliable standard (on the whole).
Anyone remember One, Ipswich.
Then there was National Express scheme 1, Belstead.
Scheme 2, Belstead.
Originally most came from Virgin, Ipswich.
Occasionally the GEML had rentals or swaps with Crewe when engines were away for classified overhauls.
EWS stand in, Belstead.
EWS scheme 2, Bentley.
Other users on the WCML still exist or did, my only 'Barbie' Scotrail/First class 90, I believe these were EWS locos rented out and mainly used on overnight sleeper services, Acton Bridge.
They were/are also very capable freight engines and I suspect those debunked from the GEML will go to Freightliner or maybe one of the other TOCs like GBRf or DRS, having said that I think DRS are now all class 88.
Freightliner original scheme, Belstead Manor.
Scheme 2, Brantham.
Scheme 3 'Swoosh', Ipswich.
Finally a blast from the past, the original freight engines were classed 90/1 and renumbered so. In ties with Europe several were painted in Euroschemes, this one being SNCB (Belgium), Ipswich.
It'll be sad to see the class 90 go from passenger service and I'm hoping to grab one in just under three weeks when I head to the airport for the grand US tour.
I've not heard about the freight TOC's and suspect they'll be running for some time yet, the class 86 is now past 50 years old and still running strong on the GEML, I suspect Freightliner will grab some class 90 off the GEML and then finally withdraw the old class 86. Class 86 still run double headed as far as I know and the Belstead bank restriction still applies I believe, no other electric trains in section whilst the heaviest 86 x 86 Freightliners are going up the bank as it'll trip the sub station.
A single class 90 is more than capable and does not have that restriction, therefore it would make sense for Freightliner to swap out the twin 86 for more class 90.
So, as Colin seez, get em while you can
