4mm Building a Southern Region layout

For the past five years I have been building a layout based on the line that runs within sight of my home - the Southern's mainline to the South West. Beaminster Road station would have been located on Wayford Hill.

Wayford+Map.jpg

Wayford is a village and civil parish on the River Axe, 3 miles (5 km) south-west of Crewkerne, in the South Somerset district of Somerset, England. The parish contains the hamlets of Oathill and Clapton.

The station would have been built just to the west of the overbridge on Wayford Hill, you can see the adjacent parcel of land (above) which is still owned by the railway.

The station would have been no more than a staffed halt, capable of holding no more than five coaches however the buildings would have been built in the style of William Tite and Beaminster Road is an adaptation of Axminster without the extension on the north side of the station.

Please ignore the gap around the base, it is just plonked down to see if I like it.

Hopefully, an update will appear from time to time.

Prior to closure by BR(W) the goods yard would have been well used and certainly not overgrown however this scene shows the decline in progress.
The patchwork of concrete was a result of upgrading of facilities to serve nearby depots during the preparation to the invasion of Normandy.

Modelling on a £1200 table.
The whole thing looks very nice
Like the provender store and especially like the station building;)
More pictures please....

My mate would have recognised this domestic scene, the late Bill Jones, made this lovely washing line and here it is on Beaminster Road.

Many of Bill's details have found a new home, not least on my layout where they continue to be a tribute to his generosity and skill as a modeller.

Another of Bill's buildings, his last for Beaminster Road

A quiet corner - must plug that gap.

Despite the fact that the building is RTP, I consider to be very good. The surface of the yard was spot-drilled to allow the legs to bed-in to the surface rather than sit-on and the space under the store is too clean, totally unsuitable for the usual resident fox.

This is one of Hornby's first 'super' models, it retains its position as one of the finest ready to run models. In this case, enhanced by Adam C's subtle weathering of a Spamcan as I remember them rather than the crud encrusted 'weathered' models purported to be 'realistic'. Hornby's excellent paint finished has been buffed by careful application of T-Cut with a Q-Tip and a mixture of chocolate and black weathering powders used elsewhere to emphasise the texture.

You still haven't answered my question are you having 3rd rail.

Given the location, between Yeovil and Exeter, which has never seen third rail in reality, and the period, where it hadn't got as far as Basingstoke, you'd think not.

Fair dos - it's worth remembering that until the early '60s it was largely a London area thing, well, outside the Central Section (former LBSC lines) it was anyhow. Despite being brought up in SR territory - sort of - I always regarded third rail as exotic!

Mum used to drag me to the Breyer Ash office on Ashley Road, Boscombe to pay the coal account, I distinctly remember these odd wheelbarrow cum scales in use in the yard.
Unfortunately the bucket isn't as thin as I want it and it will be filed down for a thinner edge.
The reward was a custard slice from the bakery in Haviland Road.
