I have spent some time tonight looking at interior pictures a few  GW goods sheds and reached the conclusion that I should have steel ties rather than  timber as the span is 35ft, this shows what I have now, but at least it is fairly easy to change on the computer before actually building it

Hi Cynric,

I think you will find that the majority were timber - pitch pine in all probability, certainly available in those longer lengths in middle/late Victorian times. It would also give a more rigid structure and be better able to incorporated within the brickwork or stonework than iron ties. Also, the bracing would have been much better with timber than ironwork, at that time.

Mike, I just assumed it would be timber, I need to check some other sheds, but ties do seem quite popular with the GW.
I do know that the station roof and engine shed had ties (for obvious reasons)

I have been drawing up the windows which will be in 4 pieces sandwiched between the inner and outer walls of the shed and I plan on slotting them in place from below which should make painting a bit easier
