AA3 Toad

Morning all.

Would anyone be able to shed some light on the subject of metal sheeting added to the sides and ends of Toads, specifically diagram AA3 ?

Is it fair to say that all examples were so treated by the 1950s or was such a modification still on going at that time?

Obviously working from an image is best practice but I do not have much in the way of reference material so any information would be useful.

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi Rob.

The best I can find in the wagon bible is that most vans were plated by 1944, but it's a little ambiguous as to whether it's a particular diagram or brakes in general.

From a a small sample AA3 wagons numbered 17xxx, the only clue from the wagon stock books is that the wagon weight changes consistently from the as built 12T to 16T between the late 20s and early 40s. Whether that was as a result of adding the plates or some other modification they don't say....

There was a 5-part series of articles on GWR Brake Vans by John Lewis in Scale Trains magazine in 1983. It gives little specific info as these modifications were not recorded in the wagon register but the plating was largely carried out between the wars. If you would like a pdf of the articles then PM me with your email address.
