1143 Running in turn.

That’s half a day’s work sorting that mixed bag of PO wagons for return to the collieries in the Swansea area! 1143 pulls a very respectable load though.

Ok, what about the loco...

:)
1143 is a standard Agenoria kit with a Mashima 18/30 motor on an Agenoria motor mount with 40:1 gears. No fancy, expensive gearbox here. Sorry for the tongue in cheek tare weight, the wagons weigh 75/80 grams each. 54 wagons, I think, plus toad which weighs a bit more. I'll leave you to do the maths. The PO wagons are all from Slater's kits, some POWSides, some Dragon Models and some Slater's issues. I'll weigh the toad, PECO, if you want?

Very Nice!
There is nothing inferior in a decent worm gear drive. Quite a few of my locos are so fitted and there is nothing wrong with either their haulage powers nor the noise output. Most have the nylotron worm from Ultrascale which is very smooth and runs virtually silent.
Ian.

hi Davey, thanks, I counted the wagons, I think I got 54 once and 55 the other time, plus the toad of course. :).

I was interested in the weight of the loco, as I could imagine it sitting there spinning its wheels given the load. Very impressive performance! It’s certainly true that a bog standard worm gearbox, well set up, can deliver.

cheers

As an older model it lives in a display cabinet so I’ll need to get it out to check but I believe it’s 400 grams. I cut lead strip to fill the lower part of the boiler underneath the tank between the firebox and smoke box. The trick is to make the locomotive balance in the centre of its wheelbase. As one of my earlier models it has a rigid chassis. I now use Slater’s sprung horn blocks with a notable improvement.

Yes, I’ve found that suspension can provide some remarkable improvements in performance, as indeed dies optimising the position of the centre of gravity.

Quite right - my godfather (Rob Harrison - now part of the EM Lime Street Crew) is an absolute master of worm gear drive gearbox, his 7mm loco fleet are some of the smoothest and quietest running locos I've had the pleasure to watch.
