Your backscene is coming along nicely Geoff.

Thank you Alan, I'm just glad that I don't have as many trees to paint as you did!

Morning Geoff.

I must say its all looking nice indeed. Very Llangunllo in terms of appearance which had a lovely tone to it all.

I think that perhaps it's taken for granted that a modeller will produce a layout with a look and feel consistent with the last. It's harder than it looks!

Rest assured, for me at least, there's much in the way of inspiration being provided.

Thanks.

Rob.

Cheers Rob, I've been trying my best to keep the Penhydd / Llangunllo house style, which I feel is essential given that Bleddfa is supposedly in the same neck of the woods. I think the key to that is in using the same, somewhat restricted colour palette.

Pleased to learn that my efforts continue to inspire, thank you.

Inspirational stuff. This is one of the layouts that drew me to this forum in the first place.

Truly excellent...now to find some of the other inspirational threads...

Thank you Bob,

I am learning a lot from this thread, lots of useful tips.
John

Thanks John, I'm learning a lot myself from all the mistakes I am making, or should I call them happy accidents like the late artist Bob Ross? :D

Yes Happy seemed to be a constant, if not the only adjective in Bob ross' vocabulary. i used a similar technique to his in painting the backscene for Blakeney.

Come on then Alan, spill the beans and tell us more....;)

Here's a couple of test pieces that I painted used a variation of his techniques..........

P1170922.JPG

This was my first test panel that I painted using Bob's stippling techniques, I was rather pleased with the hedge on the left but fell into the trap of overpainting the tree and everything else, still you've got to start somewhere.

P1170955.JPG

For my second attempt I tried his method of painting a tree trunk using a small palette knife, and a few background trees. Bob uses oils for his wet on wet technique which doesn't exactly suit acrylics, nevertheless I learned an awful lot from my experiments.

For anyone who hasn't heard of the late Bob Ross, or his program 'The Joy Of Painting' then tune into BBC4 from Mon- Thursday at 19.30. BBC Four - The Joy of Painting

:) the tools of my backscene, as they are meant to be quite far away i only used the colours in the photo and that was the brush I used with Mr, ross' stippling technique.

Ooh there is nothing shabby about either of your back scenes ..... in fact I take that back, you both need more practise, I'll PM you my address, there is some 80' foot of wall you both need to daub on ;)

More food for thought, when I am ready

Best regards
Craig.

The car is fuelled up and I have my paint roller and brushes in the boot, such a shame that I can't venture into your neck of the woods due to local lockdown. :p

Still early days as I continue to build the scene up, highlights and a suggestion of distant hedgerows and trees to follow. I don't intend adding too much background detail as it will only draw the eye away from the layout itself. The complete scene measures almost 15 feet long by 15 inches high and to be honest I now need a break from the paints and brush. So a little modelling is on the cards for the remainder of the week, and then I will experiment with tree painting on scrap pieces of card.

The paints used, brilliant matt white emulsion, sap green and black acrylics also played their part. I tried both cerulean, and cobalt blue for the sky and found that the latter looked better under my layouts lighting conditions.

Thanks Adam your comment has boosted my confidence no end:)

I've had enough of the paint brush today, so I'll quit whilst I'm still ahead. But just to prove that I do run trains I'll leave you with these two photos. 1455 runs into Bleddfa Rd with a short goods train, once the far embankment is covered in static grass things should really start to come together.

Earlier this morning I plucked up the courage to paint the trees behind the road bridge, a job that I had been putting off for a day or two. In the end everything worked a treat..........

The backscene looks suitably, and subtly, fantastic!
As the grandson of an (almost)Shropshire Lass it reminds me of Houseman's Blue Remembered Hills..

I am really enjoying the development of the back scene, There is a nicely restrained sense of scale and depth to it.

Michael

Thank you Michael, I must admit that I have enjoyed painting the scene and watching it develop myself:)

Thanks Jason, those very hills provided plenty of inspiration.

Anyone who tires of those images, must be dead from the neck up !!

Lovely work Geoff

Best regards
Craig

Cheers Craig,

I'm dead from the neck up after leaning over the layout to paint those scenes! :D

Just glad that I can see light at the end of the paintbrush now. Those trees around the station building are there to catch shadows and will eventually have proper unkempt hedgerows, bushes and bosky trees in front of them. The trees behind the water tower are in the process of being highlighted, and will have proper modelled examples in front and to each side.

Funnily enough I passed over Dartmoor earlier today and your backscene looks just like what I saw, just very soft tones and colours against a greyish sky. Well done. Can I commission you to paint mine?.......

Thank you Chris,
One very sound piece of advice that I was given was to paint what you see, rather than make something up. So I spent many pleasant hours snapping the various scenes that appealed to me, whilst making note of the varying colours under different lighting conditions.

As for commissions, thanks for asking, but I hardly have the time to model for myself despite being retired!

Why not have a go at painting your own, it isn't as difficult as you might think.

Geoff

I can almost hear the clanking of the wheels as it rides over the points

It just gets better and better Geoff, it has my mojo revving up for a small project ...... probably starting in the garage next week, as we enter our short, sharp, shock, fire break lock down, here in the Principality.

Best regards & stay safe everyone.
Craig.
