SER Stepped End Wagon

Well that would certainly be challenging to make in wood. How did they prototypically bend 4.5" square timber? Or was it a milled piece?

I've seen curved timbers similar to this one and they have been cut from the solid or made up in sections. Depending on the actual radius of this piece and the availability of a wide enough plank of timber, I would imagine it was made in one piece.

A 4.5" square section piece of green oak should steam bend to that sort of curve . Ask a shipwright or a wheelwright how it is done .

Here are a couple of pictures of one of the ends. They are both complete to this stage and apart from the strip that goes around the edge, that's about it for the time being. Talking of the strip, I have been looking for Evergreen Strip No. 1110 .020" x .208" which is the perfect width for the ends. Can I find it? No, apart from the USA and I'm not paying that amount of postage and customs et al. Anyone know where it can be bought in this country?

Jon,

Evergreen [1110] 14"" O-Scale Strip (1 x 10) .020"" x .200"" (10 per pack)

Never tell with these sites whether they've got any in stock or not, but hope so.

Regards,

David

I looked up your link and they want the same for postage as well as the strip making it about £10 in total. I'll ring the Archive people tomorrow and see what they have to say.
Thanks for your help David/Barry.

I tried 2K Technologies and they don't have it. I'll have to bite the bullet and buy from the other company :(.

Oh, well. Odd.....?! but never mind, just a thought. Perhaps a name to be stored for future recall?

Not much to report but wanted to post the Mansell wheel inserts that JimG very kindly made for me. The 'fifth' one would have been destined for the reverse of the wheel but I felt that this would upset the back to back measurement. Instead, for the reverse, I cut a .020" recess in the back of the wheel and glued in a styrene disc.
The etched strapping is expected next week so, I'll be able to proceed at a much quicker pace.

One of the ends had a bow in it and after several attempts at trying to straighten it out, (on a radiator, boiling water, weighted over-night) I decided to put it in the oven. I think that I left it in too long as this is what it looked like after it came out. Actually, it was worse than this as I tried to flatten it, some hopes. Obviously, I'll have to make another but, I threw away the little bending jig and the drawing that I made for the end and so all of that will need to be made first :(:'(.

Thats some rotten luck!
But it does reaffirm my practice of keeping all those little bits of crap that are so very helpful with aligning, jigging, and ultimately building things I dont think Ill need to build again.

Things didn't go too well after me melting one of the ends but, slowly getting there now. All of the small items are finished and most of them blackened. I'm now just waiting for some warmer weather when I can get out to the shed and give it a coat of primer. The top colour arrived today from the people in Doncaster. It's only one can, 380ml, but seems to be enough to cover two wagons but, I don't think that I'll do another SER even though I have enough transfers for another 11 wagons :D.

I always enjoy your posts Jon. They usually include expressions like "Things didn't go too well" or some other inadequacy as perceived by you, but to the rest of us you end up with a superb model of a really interesting subject. Keep up the good work!
